Obama to Issue Order Closing Gitmo During First Week in Office

President-elect Barack Obama is preparing to issue an executive order his first week in office -- and perhaps his first day -- to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, according to two presidential transition team advisers.

It's unlikely the detention facility at the Navy base in Cuba will be closed anytime soon. In an interview last weekend, Obama said it would be "a challenge" to close it even within the first 100 days of his administration.

But the order, which one adviser said could be issued as early as Jan. 20, would start the process of deciding what to do with the estimated 250 Al Qaeda and Taliban suspects and potential witnesses who are being held there. Most have not been charged with a crime.

There are a lot of countries, including their homelands that don’t want them back.

Some of them DO, so they can execute them. China wants their Uighur Muslims back yesterday, but we won't give b/c sumpin' BAAAAD might happen to 'em.

In the book “Reagan's War” there is the story about the time that the USA was preparing to have training exercises near Cuba. Castro sends his people near the US interests section to “protest”. Carter cancels the exercises and Castro was laughing his ass off. Deja vu.

The problem is not that he doesn't love his country.

The problem is that his country is not the USA.

I think you are wrong. I am now almost convinced he is a socialist internationalist who does not believe in countries. These guys were big in the 1920s (Trotsky was one) who believed that there should be no borders. Just one goverment of the various Soviets

Big Mistake—Where’s he going to send the prisoners? Back to their homelands so they can terrorize again, take revenge on those who might have turned them in or get on the bandwagon for the next 9-11?
I think they are going to be tried in a regular US court.

...A slap in the face to all those who lost life and limb to capture the incarcerated terrorists.

Some of them will be sentenced. Some of them will walk. The ones that walk will kill.

I’m having a hard time giving a damn. America asked for this.

If true, this will almost certainly lead to attacks on US vital interests and could mark the beginning of the “Bush was right” movement against radical islamic terrorists. Next up, halting wiretaps on foreign radicals.

Msot journalists - and many people on this forum, I suspect - would rather cut their own necks off with a dull blade before admitting that President Bush was right about anything.

Didn’t McCain promise this?

EEE: Yes, he did. FReepers would be rationalizing this if he had won.

HELL NO I Wouldn’t...McCain was just as stupid to suggest this as is Hussein...the “American people” made the choice that usually wins out between half leftist and full leftist...elections have consequences.

Once they have constitutional protections any 2bit lawyer will be able to get them off due to lack of evidence. Most Battlefield conditions do not really allow for criminal evidence collection.

My question is when these Isalmic jihadist terrorists do get released and they go and murder American citizens, will that make Obama complicit in that murder because he changed the policy that had incarcerated.

What possibly can he say to the familys of those that lose their lives on that day?

” Kansas senators don’t want Gitmo detainees “

But, their Governor , who looks just like John Kerry, probably does.
I have lost all faith that any Republicans,
except Sarah Palin,
will stand up to Barry.
No matter what he does.

["Many of the Guantanamo detainees are cleared for release, and others could be sent back to their native countries and held there. But many nations have resisted Bush administration efforts to repatriate the prisoners back home. Both Obama advisers said it's hoped that nations that had initially resisted taking detainees will be more willing to do so after dealing with the new administration."]

Man, are these people naive.

“Big Mistake—Where's he going to send the prisoners?...”

Send them to the IDF. They know what to do with terrorists, and unlike here, are being allowed to do it with the backing of their government.

Wonderful, this will make the American people so happy to know that their new “chief executive” means business with terrorists! Oops, I think the people got it wrong AGAIN!

There’s an old Swedish quote that goes something like this” “My son, as time passes, you will be astonished to see what morons rule the world.”

The Republicans are terrified of their own shadows. It seems that the last ones with guts were forgotten names like Roscoe Conkling and Boies Penrose.

So you think KS people are finally ready to turn the old Dole seat over to a Democrat to be like the rest of the country?
