Barack Obama's choice of Leon Panetta, the former congressman who went on to serve as chief of staff for President Clinton, to head the Central Intelligence Agency has members of the intelligence community scratching their heads.
To defenders of the choice, Panetta's reputation as a competent manager and loyalty to Obama may help to shake up the agency and keep it from undermining the White House. But several ex-CIA officials contacted by TAS greeted the pick with trepidation.

No matter what happens in the next four years, his legacy is already locked in; the first black President. Everything thing else will be a detail.
“From the campaign it didn’t seem that Obama had a very realistic understanding of the dangers in this world.”
No but he could woo a crowd into believing hope and change will soothe all danger in our times. Now we have Hillary as Sec of State and Panneta at CIA. We could probably survive this if it were 1992. Not much chance now.
Panetta’s “loyalty to Obama”?? Wonder what the basis is for that? Loyalty to Hillary, yes, loyalty to himself, yes...where’s the evidence on loyalty to O?
It will be interesting to see, if there is any truth to the birth certificate issue, what a tool like Paneta would be able to do with the CIA’s resources, and for whom.
His loyalty is to the Clintons and there may well be undermining. The Clintons are already positioned to run the country: Panetta at CIA, Emanuel at the WH, Holder at Justice, and of course Hillary at State.
This does not bode well for the USA with a shattered economy vs. nuclear equipped terrorists.
He will be another Maxwell Smart.
He will be known as double ought zero.
But Panetta has the blessing of Sandy Burglar. Surely that carries some weight? It does seem that all Clinton retreads will be minding the farm. It would be difficult to imagine any of them crossing the Obama administration on any new policy. I can’t wait to see what Obama and Hillary have in mind to “solve” the Israel/Palestine war. Or what Obama and Panetta have in mind to “solve” that little problem with radical Islam. I suspect that Jack Bauer will be chained to a desk in the library. If I could buy the world a Coke...
I suspect Panetta is in CIA for one reason, entirely political. He’s the man wielding the axe, first to gut the CIA, second to embed loyal liberal moles who will surface in any future republican administration to guarantee that any critical national secrets end up on the NYT front page, and that any reasonable intelligence program will be impossible to achieve. In short, Panetta is entrusted with destroying future republican versions of the CIA. It’s a way of using future republican intelligence failures against the GOP to win elections.
It would seem that he is determined to have a political manager at CIA who will not let the undermining such as Bush failed to eradicate occur.
What is that saying about a camel’s nose in a tent?
;-)
Good one!!!
Yes. Hussein will clean house at CIA and at State and at Defense and at all the other agencies. All the non civil service people that owe their jobs to a Republican will be gone and any others who are not deemed reliable. Democrats always do this. Republicans never do which is why the Bureaucracy expends most of its efforts in a Republican administration undermining and undercutting the administration. It is bad enough that the career civil service types are almost all Democrats and otherwise statists and socialists. Republicans leave the activist appointees in place, too.
Think 2012 — that’s Hillary’s last opportunity, so undermining is on the table.
Interesting point. O suddenly sprouted up like a mushroom. He has no history, no achievements, so how could anyone have formed any loyalty to him (and why?), outside of the false loyalty brought about by machine politics?
Panetta’s appointment is mysterious and smacks of O trying to appease Clintonites who “own” him and can make him do anything—there is NO loyalty to 0!!!
