Hit by some of the financial problems that have plagued other newspapers around the country, the Albuquerque Journal has laid off seven newsroom staffers and made other changes to save money, Journal publisher T.H. Lang said Thursday.
Among those losing their jobs was Journal business reporter Tamara Shope, who was told about the layoffs Wednesday night after she filed a story and was walking to the parking lot.
"An editor told me he had terrible news," Shope said. "Seven people were being laid off, and I was one of them. He said it was because I was the last person hired." Shope said she had been hired last September.
"The irony of it was that I was the retail reporter," she said. "I was writing about people losing their jobs."
Shope previously worked for the Albuquerque Tribune, which closed last year.
In a statement on the Albuquerque Journal's Web site, publisher Lang announced staff reductions of "fewer than 10" in the newsroom.
"The people affected are good journalists who have made valuable contributions to the Journal," Lang said. "The economic environment is forcing newsrooms across the country to make painful decisions. Despite the challenges, the Journal will continue to focus on providing in-depth, thorough coverage of news that most affects our readers."

I’m not familiar. How Red is the AJ?
Dinosaur media is not dying. It is merely consolidating.
Do the simple math.
Consumers of news is going up (add TV+Internet+paper etc)
Independent producers are going down (Local rags going under, AP/Reuters/AFP filling the gap.)
Thus for every little ‘victory’ we think we’re celebrating, the anti-American news conduits grow their influence over the rest of Katrina-Americans and the world.
For what--not predicting the layoff?
Ok! I’m a pop-culture retard I guess! Who’s that?
Was reported in the local Abq news last night, “As further evidence of the recent recession ... “. Why not just report it for what it is ... no one wants to read their liberal rag.
Interesting take on the situation. I wonder how many of those losing their jobs are going to take a good look at the reasons why and not just go to the government for relief.
Center left. But occasionally they surprise like endorsing McCain over Obama.
I lived in Albuquerque when both papers were going strong. It was nice to have a morning and afternoon paper. I’d read the Journal about 4 a.m. every morning in a coffee shop on Central Avenue just as most of the hookers that strolled there were calling it a night. I overheard some interesting conversation and saw a few of them regularly enough to where we greeted each other by name.
The Seattle Times asked 500 employees to take a week off without pay at Christmas time.
The Seattle papers have done an interesting thing in an effort to cut costs. They moved their customer service unit to the Philippines. So, when you call up to stop delivery while you’re on vacation, you are calling someone in the Philippines, then they have to call the regional distribution guy and he has to call the delivery person. That’s why they never stop delivery.
Didn’t the Seattle P-I just declare bankruptcy??
That’s about the ugliest woman I’ve seen lately!
FGS, I know who Spinal Tap is!
Besides, what's wrong with being sexy?
Good—then you remember Ian and his cricket bat?!
It's sad but interesting that many FReepers fail to realize that the New York Times' circulation revenue is actually increasing, even as its ad revenue falls (across the whole industry).
Contrary to the mantra of many FReepers, it's not media bias killing newspapers, and the trend isn't a positive one.
For example, The (liberal) Washington Post saw circulation drop 3.57 percent, while The (conservative) Washington Times lost 6.47 percent.
FReepers who cheer the demise of newspapers are like the man who drinks cyanide and chortles that he'd defeated the bacteria infecting his sore. While it might give some pleasure to the vindictive, it's bad for conservatism, as it is an indicator that Americans are turning to outlets that tend to be even more liberal and less informative (which leads to liberalism).
I know many of the folks at local papers around here realize it. They see that they can't compete with the large liberal outlets, but even trying to stay with a local focus, the market is switching to illiteracy and soundbites.
The Detroit Free Press, is the major factor in the downfall of convicted mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick. Even though they are Left editorially, the paper performed a valuable services which may not be repeated if they go down.
