He did come to Sarah’s defense ... several times in fact (definitely a lot more during the campaign, but also after the campaign during talk show appearances.) The media just did not wish to cover the truth.

The only, or rather the only significant, thing I fault McCain for was backing the bailout package. Had he not done that, he would have won the election and Obama would be out in the cold. He was up 3 points after the convention and an economic approach that differed substantively from the Bush administration’s corporate welfare approach would have put McCain over the top.

McCain did not have to select Palin (but he did because he had foresight) and, IMHO, McCain did not lose the election for the Republicans ... the Bush Administration’s liberal economic policies (such as the bailouts, $1200 checks to everybody - right out of a book on McGovernomics, and the deficit spending) did.
