DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – A new international naval force under American command will soon begin patrols to confront escalating attacks by Somali pirates after more than 100 ships came under siege in the past year, the U.S. Navy said Thursday.

But the mission — expected to begin operations next week — appears more of an attempt to sharpen the military focus against piracy rather than a signal of expanded offensives ..

The force will carry no wider authority to strike at pirate vessels at sea or specific mandates to move against havens on shore — ..

I’m not sure what one 5” shell costs ... but I wouldn’t mind seeing it vaporise that pirate boat. Well worth the cost, IMO.

C’mon you guys, get real. They’ll have lawyers on board who can tell them when they can (almost never) and when they can’t (almost always) shoot. Would not want to offend or injure the little muzzies.

Now if they were white, right-wing pirates they’d be authorized to use nukes.

But Condi Rice said that this problem couldn’t be solved militarity. You have to wonder why they come out and say stupid things like that, only to backtrack later.

Yea!! A toothless force, with no authority to attack on sight at sea, or hit their land bases!
And why does EVERYTHING have to be international?
Can’t we ever do something and say “the USA did this”?
All “international” does is restrict the aggression level to suit the policies of the most sensitive nation involved. Sort of like slowing a convoy to the slowest ship.
But it is just GREAT for officers,, they get to claim a Joint International task force in their resumes.

Obama will put an end to this in his first weak (not a mispelling) in office.

Nothing like a quick response.

And...

The ROE’s haven’t changed

“The force will carry no wider authority to strike at pirate vessels at sea or specific mandates to move against havens on shore.”

What are they gonna do? Serve them with grand jury indictments?

#####

Yep.

When Hollywood makes a movie about the Somali pirates they’ll be sinister neo Nazi’s, skinheads and Christian fundamentalists.

You know, just like real life in 2009, in which these groups are causing worldwide havoc.

Probably only too true...

Wasn't there a JAG lawyer a few years ago that interfered and had a drone strike of some high profile terrorist type. It was a big deal on the talk radio shows for a day or so.

Naval forces, hell....waste of good manpower - tho I suppose it serves it's purpose for target practice.

Provide 12 drones equipped with the appropriate missles, and the guys in Tampa, FL will end piracy - at least in that region.

I don't know, but here is a place where you can purchase one 11 inch Civil War Cannon Ball Navy Shell 130 pound for only $850.00

If you can figure out how to deliver it, the ball should do the job!

“Somali pirates who hijacked the Ukrainian cargo ship MV Faina, pictured in October 2008.”

All that’s needed to combat those guys is a 24 ft Boston Whaler and an M14.

It really doesn't matter how much they cost....every once in a while we need some target practice anyhow.

Of course not!!! obammer will offer to meet with each of them personally...then offer them complete imunity from any kind of prosecution, monetary aid from the US taxpayer, free food, and chicago political convention souvenirs.

this is the age of obammer-ius!

No, they’ll endanger Navy personnel by sending them out unarmed to have a well-reasoned discussion with the pirates. At the end of the conversation, the pirates will realize the err of their ways, and will return to the coast of Somalia to teach other pirates a lesson.
