Hawai`i Free Press ^ | January 5, 2008 | Andrew Walden

Humans have been cooking food since before they were Homo sapiens....but ... There was a raw food festival in Novemeber 20-23, 2008 in Kalapana....and now this....

(From the Star-Bulletin) Jan 5, 2009:

...Halda said he and a friend, Silka Strauch, who live in Black Sands between Pahoa and Kalapana, have been eating raw vegetables and taking precautions by cleaning the produce with a peroxide rinse.

He suspects they may have accidentally consumed tiny larvae of slugs lodged in the deep folds of peppers.

I can understand the issue were it concerning meat. However, this person apparently consumed raw vegetables. Can't condemn someone for that. Most veggies taste better raw.

Are these like the dumpster divers? Did they get this out of the trash? Why the peroxide rinse? Is it no longer good enough to wash veggies with just water?

This happened in Hawaii. They have some parasites there we don’t have further North, and everywhere else in the USA is much further North than any part of Hawaii.

The first time I ever heard of rat lungworm was in Honolulu in 1962.

It seems that some Philippino gardeners had been supplementing the protein in their diets by eating the garden slugs and snails they would come across in the course of their gardening duties. Raw. The only problem with this was that the slugs were carrying the rat lungworm parasite, which immediately took up residence in the gardeners’ brains. You see, these rat lungworms seem to prefer nervous system tissues to lung. I remember thinking the worms probably ought to be called rat brainworm.

This was only diagnosed after death, in the case of these gardeners, when the medical examiners founds that forty percent of their intra-cranial matter consisted of worms.

I’ll avoid any discussion of how these folks voted, but I think we all know.

Isn’t peroxide rinse hazardous?

I hope not. I rinse my toothbrush off with it after use.

Isn’t peroxide rinse hazardous?

Not at 3% concentration (OTC at the local drug store) as the concentration goes up it becomes more and more efficient as an oxidizer. Above 30% it is downright hazardous.

There is a self taught engineer in Mexico that builds one man rocket belts that are powered by concentrated H2O2. Passed over a catalyst it breaks down into H2O oxygen and a great deal of heat which vaporizes the water to stream. He has also built and driven peroxide powered motorcycles and drag racers.

Broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots.

Not to mention spinach, artichokes, cabbage, celery, green beans, sugar snap peas, etc.

All better cooked until tender.

I actually prefer a lot of those raw (drowned in various dressings, of course) but must have my taters and yams cooked!

When you cook vegetables, the rat lungworm slugs take on an exquisite, meaty flavor reminiscent of mushrooms.
