Cheney Calls Rockefeller Wiretap Objection A 'CYA'

Cheney Calls Rockefeller Wiretap Objection A 'CYA' @ 1:21 pm by Walter Alarkon

Vice President Dick Cheney suggested that Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) only penned a letter to the Bush administration objecting to its domestic warrantless wiretapping program to give himself cover, not because he really opposed it.

Cheney, on CBS's "Face the Nation," said that congressional leaders, including Rockefeller, didn't object to the government program to wiretap phone conversations without warrants when Cheney first told them about it in 2003. Rockefeller, then the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committeee, later wrote a letter voicing his concerns about the program.

Cheney said Sunday he didn't know why Rockefeller wrote the letter.

"I always felt it was a bit of a CYA letter, that, in those crucial meetings, when we sat down to debate the program and tell them about it, in fact, everybody in the room signed up to it," Cheney said. "Nobody objected."

"CYA" is slang for "cover your a–."

Read below Cheney's full exchange with CBS's Bob Schieffer about Rockefeller and the wiretapping program.

And then there is this:

"There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years ... We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction."

-- Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), Oct 10, 2002

Cheney is an adult in a world of whinny baby leftists. I’ll miss him too, as will many others once the effects of the 0bama Koolaid wears off.

Obama: Opiate of the Asses.

I hope Cheney writes the book too, but being a class act as he is, I bet it doesn’t happen. Maybe I have had my head in the sand, but I don’t think Rove has written his book yet. Have I just missed that?

Oh...I think a book or two are coming...

W is still the pres, and D C has been the best model of loyalty, support, and deference which should be the minimum required of all VPs and presidential subordinates. But the day Obamination is sworn in, D C is free of his obligations as VP, and free to defend himself.

There has NEVER been a more unduly vilified member of an administration in modern times, if ever. I fully expect that those who were so unrelentingly viscous to Cheney will be missing several pounds of flesh when all is said and done. I could be wrong, but having seen his fiestyness break through occasionally, I tend to think that a heavy price is going to be exacted from many of those who partook of the slime fest over the last 8 years.

I so hope you are right. I’d love to see him rip into the likes of David Gregory, Bob Schieffer (sp?), the editorial boards of some of the newspapers etc. I’d buy the book in a heartbeat!

Rove is still working on his book, and I think Mrs. Cheney has said that the VP is looking forward to starting his. Hope his health holds up. Despite what happed on that bird hunt in Texas, Cheney is a pretty good shot and has more wit in his toenail than Obama has in his head.

The bird hunt is precisely why I named David Gregory. That big butt idiot went into a snit when he wasn't notified first of the mishap. Who does that jerk think he is?

Go Dick! Rip them all a new one!

Man I’m gonna miss Cheney.

I'm all the more prouder to have driven through, and twice stopped in, the state of Wyoming because it was represented by this honorable man. May God bless Richard and Lynne Cheney for their DECADES of service to this nation.

You got that right. I’m glad he’s not the White House correspondent any more. Enough already.
