Mother has healthy baby boy despite abortion warning by doctor

Gaynor Purdy was warned her first child could have a fatal chromosome defect and a life threatening heart condition. But she rejected two suggestions to terminate the pregnancy and she and her husband Lee are celebrating life with their "perfect" ten-month-old son. Mrs Purdy, 28, a quality control inspector, said: "We refused to give up on him, and decided throughout the pregnancy that as long as he was fighting, we would continue fighting with him."

The couple from Scunthorpe, Lincs, were delighted when they discovered they had conceived shortly before their first wedding anniversary. Four months into the pregnancy doctors told them that part of their unborn child's heart was narrow and underdeveloped and would mean open heart surgery if the baby was born.

They were warned the condition could worsen and around Christmas last year, an immediate termination should be considered. Further tests conducted a few days later on New Year's Eve suggested the baby could also have Edwards Syndrome - the presence of an 18th chromosome - with a life expectancy of only up to four months if birth is survived.

Consultants again recommended the couple consider aborting the baby, fearing he would little to no quality of life once he was born. For the second time, Mrs Purdy and her husband, a 29 year old forklift driver, declined the suggestion. Kai was born six weeks premature on March 5 at Scunthorpe General Hospital weighing just 2lb 6oz and immediately admitted to intensive care, but was discharged within six weeks.

One side of his heart was slightly bigger than the other which may need an operation to correct in the future, but regular tests have been showing the condition is constantly improving.

He seems perky and cute as a button. Wonder what corrective cosmetic surgery might by in order, given the syndromes they mention.

Docs in the US did the same thing to my sister-in-law years ago; telling her that their child would be born with Downs Syndrome. My nephew turned out fine. They should have sued for emotional distress.

Kind of makes you wonder how many children are disposed of in this way.Actually, I’m surprized the Telegraph is even reporting it.

Good for Mrs. Purdy and the boy. God bless ‘em!

This has happened at least a couple of times with my grandchildren. Maybe more, because it’s the kind of unpleasant business my daughters or daughters in law might not want to talk about.

Most recently, one of my daughters became pregnant. It’s her first child, and kind of a miracle baby because her husband had had chemotherapy as well as an operation for brain cancer, and after that they hadn’t expected to have any children.

The doctor kept urging her to abort, and she finally switched to a different doctor and hospital. No one knows what will happen when the baby is born, of course, but everything looks normal and the baby deserves a chance. Thank God my daughter was determined to have the child and is already talking about having another.

I have heard that parents of Downs Syndrome children find them to be especially sweet, loving people. A Downs Syndrome woman is a ticket-taker at the local movie theatre and could teach a few "normals" there about brightening customers' days...

These parents ignored their betters and opted to bring this “imperfect” child into the world. Obviously must be too brainwashed to realize that they are being punished with this baby./sarc

Same thing happened with our two children.

First OB/GYN said our baby had Trisomy 18 and recommended an abortion or as he said “the baby is incompatible with life”.

We said, we would take whatever God gave us. Our world was turned upside down for months.

Needless, to say, we had a healthy baby girl sans any genetic problems.

Our second baby, were told conclusively that he had Down Syndrome. We told them they were full of Sh%t.

I told them to fax me the report. The nurse had my wifes date of birth off by 10 years.

Again, our son was born healthy and without a genetic issues.

Every year they should take the boy back to the Doc and remind him, “Hey doc, here’s that little boy you wanted to kill.”

Yesterday we celebrated the 1st birthday of our physically perfect little grandson. At the time, the doctors told my 7 1/2 month pregnant daughter that this little boy would be “more medical trouble than he was worth” and she needed to “just get rid of him now.”

Less than a year after our first baby died from hypoplastic left heart syndrome, my wife became pregnant with twins. Because of history, she was classified as a high risk pregnancy and referred to a specialist. The specialist performed a higher resolution ultrasound (2+ hours). After which, he informed us that one of the babies had a heart defect and would need to be aborted (which presented inherent risk to the 'healthy' baby). In his office I remember things moving extremely fast and feeling like all our decisions were being made for us, so I convinced my wife to leave the specialists office leaving all our options open.

We sought a second opinion from the pediatric heart specialist whom we had dealt with a year earlier with our first son. After a twenty minute ultrasound, she told us to go back to my wife's original obgyn and assured us that all was fine (details omitted for brevity). A few months later we were blessed with two completely healthy babies.

Today they are thirteen years old, completely healthy and trying my patience every chance they get.

My wife had many problems with one of our children. Lots of bleeding, abnormal heart rates of the feotus, premature delivery - generally a lot of stress on the baby throughout the entire pregnancy.

A doctor suggested abortion, noting that the child could have brain damage, etc...

We were blessed with a beautiful girl - smart as a whip, loves us dearly, and is a real pistol and fighter (compared to her siblings) We do believe God gave her strength to fight in the womb, and at some level she knows we would never give up on her.

Two pounds six ounces is a tiny little guy. My youngest daughter was 11 weeks premature and I thought she was tiny at three pounds seven ounces. This baby might have never been born if he had different parents. There are a lot of people who wouldn’t have ignored the doctor’s advice.
