You might want to eat a little food that is healthy during this time. When you “just stop eating”, your body thinks you’re starving and begins storing fat which defeats the entire purpose.

Best wishes for a blessed ‘09.

I wasn’t. Actually, it was the ONLY way I lost weight.

I did lose 80 lbs.

What can I say? except that's one heck of a malfunctioning thyroid you got there!

Wife and I have the good fortune of having access to an athletic training room and trainer at no charge as part of our health insurance. The trainers stress that you should eat 5 times a day. 300 calories at each meal to lose weight and 400-500 calories to maintain dependent upon your training program, body size, etc. Food choices should focus on protein and green vegetables with minimal fats, sugars and starch.

Good rule of thumb: When you cook, your ingredients should not have ingredients.

That's not how it works. If you just stop eating, the body can't store fat because there's no incoming food to get the fat from. If you stop eating, you'll experience a lot of hunger pangs, but with a reduction of energy intake below energy use, the body will start to shift fuel substrate usage away from protein (needed for making new proteins) and carbohydrate (needed for cerebral function) oxidation to fat oxidation. If you stop eating, you'll start burning more fat. That's just basic nutritional biology.

If you literally starve enough, the body will shift to a slower metabolism to conserve remaining energy reserves. But this is after weeks of starvation.

I am looking forward to the invention of the “Republican” pill.

That is a pill you take that allows you to eat as much as you want without gaining weight, and also maintaining muscle tone without exercise.

Actually, this isn’t impossible. Naturally occurring substances that some people have, but most of us don’t, already do this. All that has to be done is find some way of synthesizing them, and the Republican pill will exist.

But why call it the Republican pill? Simply put, because it will be bitterly opposed by Democrats and liberals. They will not just dislike such a pill, they will HATE it with a burning passion. This is because it represents many of the things they already HATE.

1) It allows people to eat the delicious, environment destroying food, such as meats, desserts, all kinds of refined and processed foods, and in banquet sized portions.

2) It eliminates much of the reason for eating “health” foods, like tofu and bean sprouts. No longer will ordinary people be forced to eat stuff that tastes like lawn clippings to stay trim.

3) Perhaps the most bitter part to Democrats and liberals is that the pleasure of eating enjoyable food no longer needs to be balanced by the pain of starving and exercise, or eating bad tasting food. This is because they truly hate pleasure without pain.

4) Because of America’s abundance in food, even the poor can gobble down huge amounts of pleasurable food, yet still look trim and muscular.

Having more, living better, prosperity for all, the pursuit of happiness. Truly these are what the Republicans should embrace.

Interesting.

I’m going to have an apple now and pass on the cookie that is staring at me.

Here’s the quickest summary: to lose fat non-surgically, your energy expenditure has to exceed your energy intake. There is no other way.

I agree completely. Two hours on my bicycle goes by fast, and I’m happy for the rest of the day. 30 minutes on the stationary bike is like torture, and ends with a feeling of relief.

Check out the 80/10/10 diet on Amazon. It’s a bit pricey book but it has literally saved my life. I have lost 50 pounds in under 3 months’ time, my tumor markers from breast cancer went to normal levels, my sky high blood pressure readings went to normal readings like when I was a teenager, I have tons more energy and my arthritis pain went away. It really has been a miracle for me. If you want to lose weight fast, two to three pounds a day is not unusual, and do it healthily while never being hungry, then this is the miracle diet for you.

I actually “suffer” from hypothyroidism as well. I’m on 75 mcg of Synthroid, but I have to say, I don’t notice much. I was diagnosed after I dropped most of my weight. The only real benefit I gained from the diagnosis was astronomically better gastrointestinal functionality (constipation is the #1 complaint of male sufferers).

I’m not sure that hypothyroidism is a good crutch for the overweight and obese. Sure, someone with exceptionally high TSH results (35+) might suffer from sludge-like metabolism, but in general, most women suffer from hair loss, brittle nails, depression, etc. My diagnosis came on the heels of very broad mood swings. After about 2 weeks of treatment, my mood, behavior and general affect were completely stable.

I don’t believe that hypothyroidism is a broad-stroke, catch-all excuse for obesity. I’m sure many people go untreated, but those who are treated can generally expect 10 - 15 lbs. of weight loss after starting treatment but no more.

This was the second year in a row for me where losing weight was not a resolution. That's because I got serious. And this writer is correct...any diet will work, if you work it. And then when you lose the weight, it's all about portion control.

I eat anything I want, even fast food...but I don't eat alot. I always leave something, I take off the bread, try to stay away from the carbs (the carbs are what get ya) and I have a great life. I look better than I've looked in 30 years, why wouldn't I want to enjoy myself by eating good food. I watch what others eat compared to me and I'm appalled. WE DON'T NEED THAT MUCH FOOD to survie. We've trained ourselves.

Actually, it takes more then not eating so much and exercising more - it’s all mental, so mentally one needs to change their mind about the benefits of being fat and consider the toll it takes over time. Most people diet, but don’t change their mind about anything - so, it’s a circle with no end.

I finally found something that works for me. I don’t have to worry about a specific diet or do any exercise. I’ve lost 70 pounds and kept it off for three years.
I take an Omega 3 [flax seed oil]. I started taking it for arthritis, and it helps control appetite. I use green tea extract [capsules] which is thermogenic and burns fat over time.
Inositol helps with fat metabolism and 5htp helps with appetite but I started taking it for other reasons. Just stumbled onto this. I lost about 5 pounds a month.
It hasn’t been hard, I’ve had to get rid of old clothes that were too baggy.
I have an appetite, but don’t eat a large quanitity of anything because I feel full quickly. I can eat whatever I want to eat. When we go to a restaurant, I eat some of everything but can’t finish the meal because the portions are too big. Always bringing a box of leftovers home with me.

The best diet that I’m aware of is the “See Food Diet”. When you see food—you run! ; )
