A self ruled Kenya may have come into being in 1963, but prior to that it was “British East African Protectorate” until 1920. Then it was changed to “Kenya Colony” in 1963. It was Kenya in 1961, just also a “Colony” of Britain.

Virginia and Georgia was still Virginia and Georgia even though it was under British rule.

Kenya was founded in 1921. It gained it’s independence and sovereignty from the British in 1961.
