ST. PAUL, Minn. | The campaigns of Republican incumbent Sen. Norm Coleman and Democratic challenger Al Franken wrangled Monday over hundreds of unopened absentee ballots that could still tip Minnesota's Senate race.
Lawyers ended a testy public negotiation session convened by the Secretary of State's Office without agreement on which ballots to open or how many should be under consideration.
That leaves the heavy lifting to a series of regional meetings that begin Tuesday. The ballots that make the cut at those meetings will be opened in St. Paul by Monday.
Those ballots are important because Mr. Franken leads Mr. Coleman by just 47 votes after the manual review of more than 2.9 million ballots.
The absentee ballots in question were incorrectly rejected by poll judges on or before Election Day, mostly because of clerical errors outside the four legal reasons for rejection.
The state board overseeing the recount ordered that the ballots be counted, and the state Supreme Court agreed - although justices added a few wrinkles. A majority ruled that either campaign can keep any ballot out of the mix with a written objection, leaving spurned voters the option of going to court to reinstate their ballot.
Local officials identified some 1,350 rejected ballots they now say should count, but Mr. Coleman's campaign suggested there are an additional 650 that should be added.
A large share of the ballots already identified come from counties where Mr. Franken ran up big margins over Mr. Coleman. Minneapolis alone accounts for almost 10 percent of the ballots.
Mr. Coleman's proposed additions skew heavily toward suburban and rural counties where he did better in the election.
By this weekend, the Secretary of State's Office is supposed to open the pile of ballots and add the votes to the race tally. It's the...

Hmmm.....
Why are they continuing with this charade? Franken will be given the election, no matter what.
maybe minnesota will have a senator by the next election...
maybe minnesota will have a senator by the next election...
That’s what I thought too. This whole recount thing has taken forever, and now that Franken is in the lead, I expect Franken to be officially declared the winner.
Grooooaaaannnn!
What a farce!
Or maybe they will have Al Franken.
The Rats will seat illegally elected Franken but refuse to seat lawfully appointed Senator Burris.
“The Rats will seat illegally elected Franken but refuse to seat lawfully appointed Senator Burris.”
Buying Senate Seat Good, Selling Senate Seat Bad?? ;>)
Appaently Minnesota is zip but "Cook County - North"
These people have accomplished one thing. I have worked as an election judge in the last four major elections. I get paid far more at work than I do as an election judge. These people have convinced me we no longer need election judges. Since the rule of law no longer applies we only need truck drivers to drive ballots over to St. Paul where canvassing officials can estimate how things might have been. This will save time.
However, conservatives should give up thinking of Minnesota as a battleground state. It isn't.
Don't feel bad about this. Norm Coleman is a soulless clown who would knife his grandmother or mother in the back for one more vote. He's a former Democrat and a RINO of the first order. He likely has more class than Franken which is about as erudite as saying Al Gore is so fat he has a carbon foot print the rival of Bigfoot, except Bigfeet might make trusty friends.
I was thinking ManBearPig.
Yeah, taking a “victory” from a Democrat would be like taking candy from a baby. And since in our day and age we always give our kids only what they want...
“...on which ballots to open or how many should be under consideration.”
Let me guess: those posted from APO or FPO addresses won’t be considered!
Absentee ballots need to be forbidden unless its a state department guy or an American GI.
I don’t have a problem with the county office opening two weeks early for eight hours a day and letting folks arrive at their own time to vote early. Thats been working great.
But as demonstrated in this case....these dang fools really can’t handle absentee ballots. The amusing thing....if this had been a drivers license application or hunting license....no problem...they’d pay real good attention. But they were acting stupid and making mistakes with the ballot.
“Absentee ballots need to be forbidden ..”
There’s certainly too much opportunity for voter fraud when they keep “finding” new absentee ballots.
Okay, this is the last straw. I wondered what it would take for me to throw my hands up and say “I give up!” This is it! After that 2000 debacle that Algore put this country through, the Republican majority had the opportunity to fix our broken election system, which makes it too easy to steal elections. They didn’t. In fact they accomplished NOTHING! They let the left continually dis-credit everything our President successfully accomplished, and they did nothing to stop it. In fact, some of them even enabled the press in their jihad to destroy the Bush Presidency. Once again they sit on their hands as Minn. attempts to steal a Senate seat for a mentally ill clown, and the democrats successfully block the Presidents right to make recess appointments to the courts. I can’t even watch my political shows any more, which I once enjoyed so much. Unless our dead party does something radical, or completely replaces all Washington Republicans, our future is bleak.
Next time I hear one of them refer to “the NOBLE Senate”, I will remind him/her of all this...
And then ask please tell who among them is NOBLE?
A pox on all of them.
There are SOME Republicans who are fighters, and strong conservatives, and I believe the best thing we can do is support them, and vote for conservatives in the primaries.
Many people don’t vote in the primaries, so our votes really count there.
