Obama And That Other Ponzi Scheme: president-elect's name may emerge in Norman Hsu fraud trial
The Smoking Gun ^ | 12/31/08

Posted on 12/31/2008 11:02:23 AM PST by Behind Liberal Lines

DECEMBER 31--As if being linked to one high-profile criminal case weren't enough, President-elect Barack Obama's name may soon pop up in another federal prosecution, this one involving a massive Ponzi scheme.

In addition to the Rod Blagojevich pay-for-play probe, Obama could figure in the upcoming fraud trial of Norman Hsu, the disgraced Democratic fundraiser who was charged last year with operating a $60 million pyramid scheme.

In a letter last week to U.S. District Court Judge Victor Marrero, Hsu's lawyer, Martin Cohen...noted that ...it was "inevitable" that his client's "connections" to Bill and Hillary Clinton "and other democratic notables--including perhaps the president-elect--will be introduced at trial."

Before becoming a key fundraiser for Hillary Clinton's presidential bid, Hsu co-hosted a 2005 California fundraiser for Obama's political action committee and introduced the Illinois Democrat to Marc Gorenberg, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist who later joined the Obama campaign's national finance committee. Prosecutors allege that Hsu directed his investors to donate money to specific candidates, and then reimbursed them in violation of federal campaign laws.

Strange. I did a search of Google news to find out if the New York Times, AP or Washington Post had printed a story about this and couldn't find a thing. You would have thought they'd be all over this.

Hsu’s lawyer is 100% brass, ain’t he? He argues that negative publicity about somebody else makes it impossible for Hsu to get a fair trial, and then the inauguration would take place during the 2nd week of the trial if it isn’t postponed...and several Obama appointees are connected to Hsu! Awww.
So we should wait ‘til some of the public furor dies down. Hey! What if another Madoff comes along in the meantime? What if things get worse instead of better? What if the public gets more stuff to be steamed about?
Maybe we should just let poor Norman go home!
Seriously, now, given some of the polls and surveys lately, showing how uninformed voters are, don’t you think it would be easy to find 12 people who never heard of Norman Hsu? Or Bernie Madoff? Sure it would.

Prosecutors allege that Hsu directed his investors to donate money to specific candidates, and then reimbursed them in violation of federal campaign laws.

In all likelihood this is a non-issue for Obama. The most that could possibly happen is that Obama’s campaign would have to return the money and pay a fine.

Very remote is that his campaign manager would go to jail.

The candidates themselves are insulated from responsibility when it comes to illegal donations. All they have to do is say “I was unaware that those donations were funneled through straw donors”.

"In addition to the temporal proximity of the Madoff arrest, adverse press coverage will be heightened because of Mr. Hsu's already notorious fundraising activities on behalf of major democratic candidates for federal and state offices, and the fact that, if the trial takes place as currently scheduled, the presidential inauguration will take place during the second week of the trial. Several of the candidates to whom Mr. Hsu has contributed - illegally, according to the government -, including Hillary Clinton and Bill Richardson, have been nominated for cabinet positions in the incoming administration."

This is the same Norman Hsu who failed to appear in court last year for fleeing a sentencing hearing for a prior charge. His lawyer at the time said that Hsu thought he was getting on a BART train to the courthouse, but got on the wrong train (Amtrak cross-country). Never mind that BART doesn't go to the courthouse.

Hsu was also laundering money through a Daly City family (Paw), the husband being a mailman and the wife a truant officer.

I think the MSM downplayed the Hsu story at the time because it interfered with the Republican Jack Abramoff "culture of corruption" mantra since the 2006 mid-term elections.

I actually think the media downplayed the Norman Hsu story because he was a bundler listed in the investigation that Fred Thompson headed up back in Chinagate.
