Watch group questions latest border fence tally

BISBEE — Officials with Customs and Border Protection in Washington, D.C., announced last week that fence construction along the southern border of the U.S. has surpassed the 500-mile mark, with about 280 miles built in Arizona.

The Secure Fence Act of 2006 authorized the construction of 670 miles of fencing in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. CBP’s Secure Border Initiative program was established by the Department of Homeland Security in early 2007 to carry out the Congressional mandate.“As the result of a comprehensive operational analysis, the U.S. Border Patrol determined the need for tactical infrastructure — including fencing, patrol roads and lighting — at locations along the U.S.-Mexico border in order to impede illegal cross-border activity,” says a press release from Customs and Border Protection. This graphic shows not only photos of the types of fencing that are used, but also where fencing has been completed …#8221; the areas along the border in green. (Courtesy of Customs and Border Protection) However, Glenn Spencer, president of American Border Patrol, a non-government and nonprofit organization based in Hereford that performs aerial surveys of fence construction, said the figures provided by the Department of Homeland Security are misleading.

“DHS implies that it has built 278 miles of pedestrian fence. However, it is including in this figure 76 miles of old pedestrian fence that had been completed long before 2007. The number of miles of pedestrian fencing that had been built by the Secure Border Initiative in compliance with the Congressional mandate is 202 miles, not 278 miles as they reported,” he said.

I don't live that far from the border (about 40 miles), so I guess I could take a trip down there and do a little verification of my own. But, I guess I'd be so frustrated with the inattention, the lies, I'd get ill. They want us to shut up, be quiet, and like it. Well, it's not going to happen.

How many Americans are killed every year by illegal gangs? How much of the drug traffic is a result of illegals? How much of a burden on our state, (CA) and the nation are the illegals responsible for? Way too much. And the government just wrings its hands, and blames us for not welcoming gangs of thugs?

If you click on the link be sure to check out this story.SIERRA VISTA — Several parents have pulled their children out of Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic School amidst accusations that the church is harboring illegal immigrants.

In an e-mail to other parents, Gustaf Van Acker told them of the accusations, which he said he heard from an employee of the school.

The e-mail came after Van Acker said he had spoken with Father Bob Brazaskas and school principal The e-mail came after Van Acker said he had spoken with Father Bob Brazaskas and school principal Jim Gordon.Father Bob, Principal Gordon (and before him Henry Bos), have been in the practice for a number of years, by their own admissions, of harboring illegal aliens in and on our church/school grounds,” the e-mail read. “I will say, in their defense, that this practice is not only condoned by the Tucson Diocese, but is actually mandated by church policy … ”

Brazaskas, in a phone interview Tuesday, said the church is doing nothing illegal. “We’re not harboring them at all,” he said. “They’re not staying here. We give them food and water, and then send them on their way.

“They don’t stay here, we don’t want them to stay here overnight.”
Reader comment:What have we learned here? It is “compassionate” to let poor people risk their lives to cross the border and then give them refuge in a school – without knowing who the people are, what their intentions may be, and their state of health. Those who believe in securing the borders are “hateful, uncaring racists.” The best way to demonstrate compassion is to encourage breaking the law, ignore common sense precautions, and attack everyone who disagrees as “hateful, uncaring racists.” It’s America’s fault, white people’s fault, Hispanic American’s fault, and Border Patrol’s fault. Thinking, of course, not required. “

Why who'd a thought DHS would mislead us ?

Thier total includes more none fence than actually fence. Including the private development lake and two foot of leeve, built at Hidalgo. How many campaign dollars did the texas witch Kay Baily Hutchson get out of that little tax payer rip off.

The miles and miles of invisible fence are still invisible and still do not work!!!

The actual dead give away that this is all BS. Is that if they were proud and up front with their work, there would be pictures and maps and views of all their work. Showing locations and progress of what had been accomplished. None can be found!! Oh, the 3.3 miles of leeve, was at a cost of over nine million.

Earlier this year, the government began building 18-foot-tall concrete-filled steel beam pedestrian fencing instead of the 13-foot-tall mesh pedestrian fencing. Spencer commends the use of the newer fencing system because it helps to reduce the number of illegal immigrant apprehensions along the border and impacts the ability of smugglers to move drugs into the United States.

You guys are way too paranoid...its clear that the US government is doing something ..you dont think its enough? put more pressure on em. My only point is that you get what you want and then you berate the people doing it....Oh well now they are voted out of office so you get to start over again...good luck with the next group.

As a chain is characterized by t’s weakest link, one little gap in the fence will render the whole border fence useless. Babylon’s great wall (wide enough for chariot races) was useless when the Medes & Persians redirected a sluiceway’s water and their army walked right in through it.

The great Wall of China was breached by bribing a gate guard.

Your comment shows a lot of shallowness...

I live in New Mexico...I have no problem with what the US govt. is doing ...it will help a lot and should be applauded and not denigrated, unfortunately if you built a wall 30 foot tall on the Mexican border it would not keep everyone out. Anyone want to build a wall on the Canadian border? What about the Atlantic and Pacific oceans? If I was a terrorist the first thing I would do is buy a boat. If I was a coyote the first thing I would do is buy a boat.

Playing defence only goes so far

with about 280 miles built in Arizona.

If they are counting that 3 wire barbed wire fencing along our border as a part of it they are probably accurate.
