From the comments section. It seems there was a written agreement between the mother and father. The mother broke the agreement because she learned that the father was seeing somebody.

She withdrew them from school so he couldnt even visit them there. She would not let him see them for xmas. He was torn apart. This had nothing to do with him as a person. Stacia still loved Brice and could not accept the fact he left and wanted no part of her. Then when he did find someone that was wonderful to him, she could not stand that. "
