Actually, they do recognize Him as Messiah. It’s just that their job description for Messiah does not include death on a cross to pay for the world’s sins or being Son of God...

well Islam does recognize Christ, but only as a prophet, just not as the messiah. Does that imply that they believe:
- that Jesus was the son of God, or
- that writings about Jesus' words should be considered meaningless, or
- The writings that state that Jesus called himself the son of God are in error, but writings about him should otherwise be considered meaningful, or
- Jesus did call himself the son of God, even though he wasn't, but that doesn't preclude him from otherwise being a good person with meaningful things to say?
The first interpretation is the Christian one, and the second is decidedly anti-Christian. If one doesn't believe either of those, I would think one would have to believe one of the other two; frankly, I can't see how the latter viewpoints would make much sense.
