Rep. Charlie Dent Urges President Bush to Pardon Border Patrol Agents
Express-Times ^ | 12/22/08 | Jessica Coomes

U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Lehigh Valley, today is sending a letter to President Bush, urging the outgoing president to pardon two former Border Patrol agents who are in prison for shooting a drug smuggler.

Dent wrote that the two agents, Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean, "were acting in fulfillment of their duty and responsibility to protect our borders and enforce the law, and they have been unjustly punished for their actions."

Though Dent's congressional district is hundreds of miles away from the Mexican border, the congressman has taken an interest in border-related issues because he sits on the House homeland security committee.

"Border Patrol agents are charged with the dangerous job of detecting, preventing and apprehending wrongdoers and are confronted on daily basis with difficult life or death decisions," Dent wrote in his letter to Bush.

"Maintaining control and security of our borders is central in our efforts against terrorism and critical to law enforcement activities that keep our citizens safe.

This case has not only undermined the trust and confidence of our Border Patrol agents, but it has also raised questions about the discretion and decisions of federal prosecutors."

Yeah, fat chance Charlie. - Bush threw them under the bus in the first place.

I hate to think that Bush will leave office without pardoning these guys. It makes no sense to me.

I agree with you 100%. I can't imagine these two guys being anything but far more just than the character whose behind they put a bullet in. They should be given a medal and, if President Bush doesn't pardon them, shame on him.

I cannot help but think less of Bush if he doesn't pardon these guys.

I wish Bush would pardon them. They did their job and to protect politically motivated people over these two men is unforgivable.

Shooting a drug smuggler or altering the scene before the FBI showed up?

What would happen to a regular citizen who impeded an investigation?

These cops were playing the WOD game here. The WOD is sapping us of our liberty. When those profiting off of the WOD forfeit their liberty ... I call it good karma.

Get rid of the WOD and the Border Cops then concentrate on shooting illegals.

Guess the President only likes native Mexicans not, Americans with Hispanic surnames.

I sent Rep. Wittman a letter urging him to do the same. Maybe a couple of others won’t hurt.

One day, we should try to combine one of these “cops doing their duty” threads with a “cops shoot Granny” thread. We might just create a black hole that will consume the Earth.

Read yesterday that ‘Bushs’ legacy may not be as negative as previously thought’. Unfortunately, a lot of us will remember his treatment of these two public servants up to this point - regardless of whether he pardons them or not. They should have never even been questioned. He silently turned his back on them and continues to totally ignore this issue.

This is one topic where I'd like to see a journalist really question him.
