Mitchell to Buchanan: You Wouldn't Say Caroline 'In Miers Country' If You Knew Her
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

The people just don't know Caroline like I do. That was the essence of Andrea Mitchell's defense of the would-be senator after Pat Buchanan analogized her to another nominee who famously flopped. Appearing on Morning Joe, Buchanan unleashed a merciless metaphor.

PAT BUCHANAN: It's not only entitlement. It appears–we are getting close to Harriet Miers country, where Bush put her out there, and it became transparent when people started going after her that she wasn't quite up to this --

Pat's barb stirred Andrea into action.

Buchanan says Caroline’s getting close to Harriet Miers country ping to Today show list.

Hope this doesn’t open some old FR wounds. I remember the Miers Wars here!

Harriet Miers was an accomplished lawyer, law firm managing partner, and senior legal and political advisor to George W. Bush as governor and president before Dubya tried to appoint her to the Supreme Court. Caroline Kennedy, on the other hand, is John and Jacqueline Kennedy’s daughter.

That’s true. I wouldn’t say Caroline Kennedy is in Harriet Miers territory. It would be an insult to Harriet Miers.

Great point, although Miers was not qualified for the SC and was a poor pick, but at least Bush (appears to have) redeemed himself by going with Alito.

I thought you Yanks fought hard to get rid of Royalty a couple hundred years ago.

If you wanted Royalty, then why didn’t you appoint JFK to be your King, and be done with it? Or Bush Sr? Or Clinton?

Sad thing is, after Stevens and Ruth Buzzie kick off, old Harriet will look like Scalia next to the One’s picks.....

At least he’ll be replacing lefties, so it’s a wash.

Anthony Kennedy is the one who has to hold on. He’s “only” in his early 70’s, so we should be somewhat safe.

When people raise the possibility that you may not be able to do a job for which Al Franken may be qualified, ya oughta just slink away and hope you’re forgotten.

When will people learn?

Qualifications must never be discussed when democrats are the topic. This only applies to Republicans. Further, the bar for a elected federal office must be another federally elected office. This can not be applied to Democrats as previously mentioned. Geez!

Right. Although unqualified when compared to Alito, Miers was more qualified to sit on the SCOTUS than Princess Schlossberg is to go to the Senate.

I still think it was brilliant strategery to put Harriet Miers out there. No matter who President Bush had nominated first - the left would have had fits. So - they put Miers out there - knowing she would remove her name from consideration, then throw down with Alito. Brilliant.

Let’s not insult Harriet Miers — she may not have been up to SCOTUS standards but she was still a better nominee for any public office than Caroline Kennedy!!

That is most certainly not what Pres. Bush was trying to do — there was no “strategery” at all with the Miers nomination, be serious. He thought that b/c she had been a dear friend and colleague he could get her onto the SCOTUS, and he was dead wrong.
