NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Poor schlumps out there know how to get along with next to nothing. But these were multi-millionaires that Bernard Madoff wiped out: show some sympathy! That was The Donald's daffy drift in speaking to Wolf Blitzer on this afternoon's Situation Room on CNN.

View video here.

DONALD TRUMP: They put 100% of their money with this character, this sleazebag. 100% and they're wiped out. And you know, it's one thing when you grow up and you don't have money or you get to a certain age and you don't: you learn to live. [But] these people have had hundreds of millions of dollars and one phone call on a Thursday night: they're wiped out, have nothing left.

They may have been wiped out of most of their financial assets. But don’t most of them still own a mansion or two,
a yacht, a condo somewhere warm, another condo in Aspen?
They could sell off some of those assets and perhaps still
live rather comfortably-and of course they must have pensions and of course there is social security.

Hasn’t Trump filed for bankruptcy multiple times, leaving creditors without money?

Did they have a counterpoint by people who have lent The Donald money for some of his "less successful" real estate investments?

He never has personally. Some of his projects have, but he is smart enough to keep his personal fortune shielded from his bad choices.

It’s the greatest gift possible although none of those who have been wiped out will realize it. Without the protection of big money, you need to face yourself, your society and your God.

Greed, pure and simple is what caused them to lose it all. The greed for more and more. Tens of millions were not enough. They all wanted more.

It would still be nice if all of us could chip in and buy a bucket of caviar... We'll get the Iranian stuff - that'll cheer them up.

And putting all their eggs in one basket...

DONALD TRUMP: They put 100% of their money with this character, this sleazebag. 100% and they're wiped out.

Isn't the first rule of investing to diversify? Folks of substantial means, and their advisers, should of all people know this.

Well, they will probably receive some of the bailout money and in turn some of that will be spent on caviar so you could say we all chipped in.

Unless their advisers were also part of the scheme or were
enamored with Madoff as well.

I did read that some clients spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to join an exclusive country club just so they could meet Madoff.

I could easily branch out and become a financial adviser-clients would not need to spend that kind of money to meet me.

He said that he knew some that had given madoff all their money and had borrowed against their homes and other investment properties to give him more.

LOL
