March for Life Soldiers On Despite Pro-Abortion Barack Obama's Inauguration

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- With the inauguration of incoming pro-abortion president Barack Obama, some pro-life advocates have been concerned that next year's March for Life will be canceled. However, that's not the case and the organizers of the March are moving full speed ahead with plans for a large event.

The pro-life movement worked overtime to oppose Obama during the presidential campaign and, with his election, pro-life advocates hope a strong March for Life will send the new president a signal that they don't want him promoting unlimited abortions.

This year's March will take place on January 22 -- on what will be the thirty-sixth anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that allowed abortions for any reason throughout pregnancy.

In addition to concerns about the March due to the inaugural, some pro-life advocates have wondered whether the March for Life is taking place because they haven't received significant information about it.

March for Life organizers had computer problems that have limited their ability to get timely information to pro-life groups nationwide as they normally do months in advance.

But Nellie Gray says she is working hard to turn out the largest pro-life contingent possible.

"We are looking forward to having huge crowds in our nation's capitol to give voice to the unborn through two days of pro-life activity immediately following the presidential inauguration," she said in an email LifeNews.com received.

Because of the high demand for hotel rooms in association with the inauguration, Gray urges pro-life advocates to make plans now to obtain hotel accommodations or housing in the area.

With Obama becoming president on a Tuesday, the expectation is that the March will come either one or two days after he signs an executive order rescinding the Mexico City Policy.

That's the Bush administration rule protecting taxpayers from having to fund groups that perform or promote abortions in other nations. The March could be the first chance to respond to the expected Obama decision.

Richard Stith, a Valparaiso University law professor, tells LifeNews.com that every pro-life person who can come to Washington for the March for Life should make plans to attend.

He says the pro-life movement needs to have "the largest March ever, to combat Obama and FOCA."

He also said pro-life advocates shouldn't think the March has been canceled because of the inauguration.

"I'm worried that others, like me, will think that the March has been canceled -- perhaps because of the inauguration taking over Washington," he said.

Although media estimates typically downplay the number of people in the March for Life, the yearly pro-life event continues to attract hundreds of thousands of people.

Our family has been every year since 2001 with the exception of 2007 (had a newborn that year). I can’t wait for the March this year.

God bess you and your family!

I went to the first March in 1974 (I believe that was the year.) There were over 60,000 people, and the press reported it as 10,000. Unbelievable! The press has been pro-abortion for nearly 40 years.

Wish I could go again to the March, but health concerns prevent it. I will instead donate money for several young people’s expenses so they can go in my place.

The March is such a great experience. If I can’t make the whole day, I usually go down at lunch to take in the event. I get to see lots of protests and marches and the difference between the march for Life and the others is staggering. The March is such a positive, upbeat experience!

We need to fight harder than ever now, and, of course, pray harder than ever.

If FReepers are there is there a way by which we might know each other? Red, white and blue carnations??

The March for Life is awesome!! If you have teenagers and young people get them out for this event.

IT WILL CHANGE THEIR LIVES!

I used to teach at a suburban Catholic school and we got a bus down to DC and it was a wonderful experience for the kids. There is a youth Masss at the Verizon Center, which will be packed to the walls (about 25 k) with young Catholics and Christians. I never met that many people at the same place and the same time and had such a friendly and cordial experience.

I hope to see you all down there! Every year is great, but I think this is a particularly important year.

“I will instead donate money for several young people’s expenses so they can go in my place.”

That’s an awesome idea. Does your church sponsor a group?

To a great many young folks getting up at 4 AM wandering out to buses in the dark and cold does not sound like a lot of fun. If they haven’t done it before you really have to psych them up for it.

I have ex-students who are already asking me about the March and how excited they are to go and meet with other pro-life young people again! See the concert, worship together and re-establish contacts form last year; there were kids from all over the US pinging each other with text mesages, getting e-contacts!

It does my old heart a lot of good, as well.
