XI'AN, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- The first China-made 2,210 kilowatt coal mining machine passed check and appraisal on Saturday in the northwestern Shaanxi Province, reducing the reliance on exports.

Trial operation showed the remote control machine, produced by Xi'an Coal Mining Machine Co. Ltd, can mine eight million tons of coal annually, according to the Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Department.

The price for each was 16 million yuan (2.3 million U.S. dollars), more than 40 percent lower than exported ones.

China's coal production doubled in the recent decade and reached 2.5 billion tons last year. But it can only produce coal mining machine with power capacity below 1,800 kw. Machines above 2,000-kw were exported from the U.S. and Germany.

I don’t think Al Gore will approve of this. Not one bit.

That's about 3000 hp.

The kw reference is interesting. Guess that's metric. 1 hp = 746W so 1kw = 1.3 hp.

Thats 2,210 kilowatts, so its more like 30,000 hp.

Either way wattage is more elegant than hp, too many horses to manage ;)

The money freed up by the productivity gains will go for more riot police to battle the newly unemployed coal miners.

No problem with that, Al Gore issues carbon credits on loan to his commie friends. Then when they are done with them they just hand them back over to Al.

“Machines above 2,000-kw were exported from the U.S. and Germany.”

They must have meant to say “imported”. Crazy Latin prefixes.

Well, harrumph!

Question is how much coal of their own do they have and can they access it? May well be importing American coal for years to come, provided Obambi and his merry band of thieves don’t deny it to them for the Greenies’ sake.

(Thank you for the Odetta.) :o)

"Thats 2,210 kilowatts, so its more like 30,000 hp."

What is 2,210 X 1000? 2,210,000

What is a HP? 746W

2,210,000/746 = 2962.4664879356568364611260053619

Make it 3000 HP

"Question is how much coal of their own do they have and can they access it?"

Communist China is the largest coal producer in the world, 2007 - 2.62 billion short tons.

"Red China is 3rd in the world in terms of total coal reserves behind the United States and Russia. Most reserves are located in the north and north-west of the country, which poses a large logistical problem for supplying electricity to the more heavily populated coastal areas."

77% of Red China's electricity is generated by coal.

Copy editor does not appear to know the difference between “export” and “import.”

Gee! lets see we have our very own home grown envor-mental morons along with these feckless politicians in Washington who are purposely killing the industrial base and the chance of an energy dependent America, while China and the rest of the world run amuk and do as they damed well please. THESE ARE OUR ENEMIES

2 million Watts divided by 746 W/hp is about 3000 hp. Doesn’t sound all that amazing as industrial equipment goes.
