I returned to San Diego in 1969. Just in time for the F-14 to arrive at Miramar. In 1983, I purchased in house in Mira Mesa. That was a great spot to enjoy watching the Top Gun classes coming in/out and training. A few of my friends and neighbors were pilots or RIOs. It was sad to see the Navy leave. I wasn't around enough of the F/A-18 pilots to pick up the terminology on that platform. One thing was clearly different. The F-18 and helicopters were much louder. The departure path for the F-18s runs nominally over Camino Santa Fe. That was much closer to my house than what was typical for the F-14 activities.
