Cao’s race did help him. He’s not the typical looking Republican. Thus Freezer Man could not portray Cao as an evil white Republican trying to deny civil rights to blacks.

Hamilton D. Coleman (R) won a seat (the 2nd) that I think was NOLA based, in 1888 (after reconstruction) for some reason, lost in 1890. He was the last GOP congressman in the state until Dave Treen in 1973 and the last from NOLA if I am correct.

By the way Caradouche is not conceding of course he wants the machines and provisional ballots checked.

Yikes the final precincts are in. They made it close. Under 2k margin for Cao.

To me, both of these LA victories are BIG upsets, as the Democrats were favored in both. This shows even more that GWB is an albatross to the GOP. His administration has been a disaster of missed opportunities. Had GWB performed halfway decently and released the border agents, all of this Oprah’s Choice phenomenon might have been averted.

A lot of those 9th Ward people moved to Houston and helped elect Democrats to county offices in Harris County on Nov. 4.

Haven’t you been paying attention, Sarah Palin was the drag on the ticket, not W. His 75-80& disapproval had nothing to do with anything. It was all Palin’s fault.

Ironic that after beating him in 2000, Bush’s huge unpopularity took down McCain in 2008. I don’t think W is getting a Christmas card from John and Cindy this year.

Of course, it also shows what happens when we’re not outspent by unprecedented margins like we were in NC(close to 10-1), IN(8-1), OH(3-1) and other states.

Step One for 2012 is evening out the fundraising. Without that we’ll be in trouble for quite some time. You can’t get outspent like that and expect to win.

That said, LA is a heavily red state, one of only a handful of states where Obama underperformed Kerry’s 2004 results, so it’s not like we started winning elections in CA or NY all of a sudden, or even OH or FL.

The VA gov race is a much bigger deal. Since W won VA in 2004, the dems won the Gov in 2005, the sen in 2006 and the Sen again in 2008. Not a good trend. If we can win the Gov back this year, that will be a good start. If we can win some statewide races in OH, CO, FL, maybe the PA gov in 2010 that will be a better start.

I did an interesting thing and looked at key Bush states that flipped to Obama this year. OH, VA, NC, IN, MO, FL, and NM. In the 2002/2004 elections the GOP was 19-2 in statewide races(Sen, Gov, Pres) in those states. In the 2006/2008 elections we were 2-19 in statewide races. Lost Governorships in OH, MO, Senate seats in OH, VA, MO, NC, NM.

As much as I’d like to say this is the beginning of some nationwide trend, it’s not. But it is a good start, and these wins and the Chambliss win are certainly some positive signs that hopefully a post-Bush GOP can start to regroup. Look at how much ground the dems made up in 2 or 3 years. Things in politics can change pretty quickly.

Suxxor.

The Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector (R) quit yesterday. The Harris County Commissioners Court will pick a replacement, I hope the D’s didn’t take that over.

I thought runoffs were for the top 2 contenders from the general election ? These results (following the link) showed 4 candidates for each office ... color me confused.

Cao’s victory is important for La GOP. 17 years ago, David Duke ran on the GOP ticket for Governor. Talk about a national embarrassment. Tonight we have Rep. Cao and Gov Jindal representing the La GOP. It will help to shed the image of the GOP being a country club for white rural evangelicals.

Sorry about that. We don't want them back, though. How about we send them to Mexico as thanks for all the illegals.

The Canadian Tories have won lots of Asian support.

****

Normally I’d root for the lesser of evils.

Duke versus Edwin Edwards......I’ d have urged blank ballots to be cast. I guess a Duke win would have been worse for the GOP in the long run but I couldn’t endorse Edwards as GOP leaders did.

These were not runoffs. There are no more federal General election runoffs in you don’t get 50% in Louisiana.

These were regular general elections that were delayed because a Hurricane delayed the primaries so the primary runoffs (still have those) were in November.

As this article states it really was the perfect storm that was needed to take down Jefferson including:

1. Jefferson's indictment
2. election delayed by Gustav, not on same day as prez election
3. New rules - closed primaries now

Two other things that might have been enough to put Cao over the top was that he isn't white, and that Obama's recent win might have made some blacks more receptive to voting for a non-black.

It's great to see Jefferson's world crumbling:

Also in the cross-hairs of federal prosecutors are Jefferson siblings Betty Jefferson, the Orleans Parish 4th District Assessor, and political consultant Mose Jefferson, who were indicted last year on charges that they conspired to loot more than $600,000 in taxpayer money from three charities.

In a separate case, Mose Jefferson was indicted on charges that he bribed the former president of the Orleans Parish School Board.

Those trials are set for early next year.

Jefferson's defeat also marks the latest and most severe blow to the Progressive Democrats, the Central City-based political organization that he founded. Among Jefferson allies who have been forced from public office since news of the FBI probe into Jefferson's dealings broke are: Renee Gill Pratt, the congressman's former legislative aide who lost her seat on the City Council; close ally Eddie Jordan, who was forced to resign as Orleans Parish district attorney; and Jefferson's daughter, then-state Rep. Jalila Jefferson-Bullock, who lost a bid last year for the state Senate.

Thanks for the info. I have always had a perverse fascination with LA politics. Still in shock over Jefferson, tho!!! I’d have sworn he’d be reelected from the slammer.

Sorry, my mistake, I meant to put CO instead of IN and was referring to Salazar’s win in 04, their gov’s win in 06 and Udall this year. I believe the republican Owens won in 2004.

Also, counted McCain’s win in MO as a satewide win.

A Gov and Sen race lost in OH in 06. 2 sen races and a gov race in VA in 05-08. A gov and Sen race in NC in 08. A Gov and a Sen race in MO 06/08. A Gov and a Sen race in CO in 06/08. A sen race in NM in 08. 6-0 in those states at the pres level in 04, 1-5 in 08. That’s pretty bad across the board at all levels.

The numbers are pretty stark. 06-08 is pretty much a mirror image of 02-04. One set really good, the other really bad.

Looking at thow things deterioratied for the party across a whole bunch of states from 06-08 it’s clear that things were pretty bad across the board and I don’t think it’s really fair to blame one person(unless it’s Bush as he takes the lion’s share). This has just been a really bad two years.

That said, the fact that things changed so drastically shows that hey can change again I think, depending on what happens. If the economy stays bad under Obama, if some big nat’l security or foreign issue pops up, if he overreaches on health care or immigration or some other domestic issue that engenders a backlash, etc...

4 years is a lot of time. But we should know by 2010 if things are looking up or if they’re still down.

Ha, yeah like SeafoodGumbo points out he could have been elected from the slammer (or the grave!) if this was held in November with the Obama turnout. Fate conspired to get rid of him!
