LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- A New Mexico infant is dead and another is getting treatment at a hospital for a rare illness called enterobacter sakazakii.
The New Mexico Department of Health said the illness is sometimes associated with baby formula.
A baby boy in Otero County has died from the bloodstream and central nervous system infection.
Now the state is advising safe ways to feed infants, including breastfeeding.
“We're doing lab tests right now we're working with the Centers for Disease Control, and the Food and Drug Administration to look at every possible avenue. Right now it hasn't been linked to any kind of formula,” said Chris Minnick, spokesman for the Department of Health.
A member of the La Leche League International said there are many ways that bottle-fed babies can get sick.
“Unfortunately by its inherent makeup it has to be produced. It has to be stored. It has to be transported. It has to be prepared and then it has to be delivered to the child through a bottle. That just offers many chance opportunities for contamination now matter how careful you are,” said Renee Beltran with La Leche.
She said breastfeeding offers more benefits.
“Breast milk can not be contaminated. It can't its made within the human body and it's delivered via the human body directly to the child,” Beltran said.
The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding up to two years, offering cancer, diabetes, and obesity prevention for both mom and child, but in the U.S., it's not the trend.
“More individuals are initiating breastfeeding. They are choosing to breast feed at the onset, but I'm sad to say I'm not seeing those numbers continue,” Beltran said.
The Health Department said parents should not stop feeding their babies formula. The infants who tested positive had different strains and are not linked.

Well there are many who cannot breast feed, like adoptive parents. I never found it a problem to bottle feed. I did sterilize glass bottle of formula. I dont even know whether one can find a baby bottle sterilizer today. I remember my father sterilizing my brother’s formua on the stove in a special pot with a rack when I was a child.
The mother’s breast milk doesn’t have melamine which has been introduced into infant formula, dog food and whatever else we buy from the chi-coms.

Makes you wonder how the human race survived for all these years without man’s meddling to improve it, doesn’t it?
It’s not the sterilization of the bottles....it’s the adulteration of the formula.

I’ve always been an advocate.
I think most baby formula comes from China, where they put poison it.
My Mama said she never could breastfeed; she didn't have enough milk. My Daddy made the comment that she was a good 'brood cow' ( they had 8 kids), but she wasn't much of a 'milk cow' ;o)
I never had a problem, because I took the "booze and snooze" advice in a book about breastfeeding. Not drinking to excess, but a little beer or wine from time to time, and trying to nap while the baby did.

Lack of stress makes a big difference.
Proper nutrition does as well. I always ate well when I was nursing as far as not eating junk but the minute I tried to cut back on the amount of food to keep from gaining weight, my milk supply dropped incredibly. Even with drinking lots of extra water, which is also important. I just could not decrease my food intake.
For many women who have problems, likely many of those problems could be related to diet, fluid intake, and stress. But it’s hard to nail down and with the time it takes to figure that stuff out, well, you just don’t have it with a hungry baby.
