WEST HOLLYWOOD -- Firefighters are trying to determine the cause of a massive fire at a landmark strip club in West Hollywood.

Firefighters were sent to "The Body Shop" strip club at 8250 Sunset Boulevard around 6:45 a.m. Thursday morning.

Flames could be seen shooting through the roof. The fire was mainly confined to the attic, fire inspector Frank Garrido said.

The fire was extinguished within an hour, but the building sustained about 70 percent damage.

Sunset Blvd. was closed in both directions between La Cienega and Crescent Heights.

People in nearby buildings were evacuated, but the fire was contained to the one commercial building. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Arson investigators were called to the scene.

"The Body Shop" claims to be the longest-running strip club in L.A. It was mentioned in the 1980s Motley Crue song "Girls, Girls, Girls."

What I have noticed in the past is that the proprietors of these establishments are not above setting fire to their businesses when they start going bad. Somebody should check how recently the insurance was increased.

When I was a college student at LA Valley College in the sixties, I dated a math major attending UCLA who worked there.

I'll bet that she had a way with figures.

There are “landmark” strip clubs?

Yes, if you had ever seen heaven lee in printer alley, you would have agreed. The fiddle and steel guitar bar , also known as the "Cheers" bar of Nashville, has been a place where musicians, artists, tourists and nashville locals meet to listen to the finest country music in nashville since 1996.

This location was once home to "The Black Poodle." It was one of Nashville's first and finest exotic dance club.

Back in the 60's, it was home to the world famous Heaven Lee, a Latino dancer from havanna, Cuba. The club was always packed when she was in town.

Actually she was there way up in the earlie 80's. She was over fifty when I saw her and still hot as a fire cracker.

West Hollywood is a big gay area now. Business was probably down. You might be right.

Back in the early ‘90’s I was a frequent visitor. It was one of the few places you could watch strippers and drink beer in LA. I remember seeing many hair bands in there at the time.

Oh well, at least we still have Jumbo’s Clown Room.

Rodney to crowd:" Whadya say we bust up this joint????.....no wait.... next week AFTER the fire..."

She helped me through Thomas's Calculus book and Sears and Zemansky's Physics text. I required lots of 'coddling' at nineteen. ;-)
