Pardon Me?
The Chicago Daily Observer ^ | December 4, 2008 | Daniel J. Kelley

Ryan’s press secretary dodged more shots than a goalie in the National Hockey League. Scandals became daily fodder for the press. Senator Peter Fitzgerald performed one of the most statesmanlike acts in recent memory by pressing for the appointment of Patrick Fitzgerald as US Attorney to replace Scott Lassar (who accepted a position at the prestigious law firm defending corrupt politicians and white collar criminals).

Senator Fitzgerald incurred the wrath of the entire political class in Illinois in making his selection. Democrats and Republicans alike, with prominent persons such as Ryan, US Senator Durbin, House Speaker Hastert and many others complaining that a pliant “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” local attorney be selected for the position. The appointment ultimately cost Fitzgerald his renomination. Ryan’s friend, Topinka, in her capacity as State Republican Party Chairman, helped scuttle Fitzgerald by refusing to endorse his candidacy for reelection as an incumbent. Fitzgerald bowed out and did not seek a second term which helped clear the way for the accession of Barack Obama, who succeeded Fitzgerald in the US Senate for a brief period of time.

The most obscene canard issued in Ryan’s lengthy career was his claim that his decision not to seek reelection was due to the actions of those on the far right wing of the Republican Party. This vast right wing conspiracy had driven him from office or so Ryan wanted us to believe. He never referred to his own corruption or the polls that showed that virtually all Illinoisans had no confidence in their governor. He also did not allude to the fact that Attorney General Jim Ryan (no relation), had confronted him and threatened that if "Gorgeous George" did not retire in 2002 that he was prepared to challenge him for the Republican nomination.

Naturally enough, President-elect Barack Obama has declined to state his position on Ryan's application for a pardon. It would displease the corrupt political class in Illinois if Obama would oppose the application, so he remains silent.

Point taken. Good goalies “block” shots. Of course, it has been so long since there has been a major league hockey franchise in Chicago that the writer probably forgot that fact.

I am not sure if this is the whole story. But it is a national tragedy the way the corrupt and the liberals have destroyed the Illinois Republican party.

It's pretty close to the story as I understand it. Peter Fitzgerald (no relation to Patrick) was independently wealthy and didn't need to put up with the crap he was getting from the Illinois Republicans and walked away, so we got Jack Ryan who got into trouble and he dropped out, which led to Alan Keyes running against Obama, who at the time (and not that long ago) was relatively unknown. Without the Illinois Repuiblicans playing games, Fitzgerald could have still been our senator and Obama still been an unknown.
