ACLU accuses OHP of racial profiling
News-Herald ^ | December 4, 2008 | Nick Carrabine

The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio sent a letter to the Ohio Highway Patrol Ashtabula Post warning them that targeting people based on their race is illegal and should not be tolerated.

Jeffrey Gamso, ACLU of Ohio legal director, said his group has received numerous reports of Latinos who reside, work or travel through Ashtabula County being stopped, searched and detained without due cause.

Reports suggest the OHP also has called Immigration and Customs Enforcement and detained legal residents even if they produce proper documentation showing they are lawfully in the United States, Gamso said.

"This is a transparent attempt by the OHP to check the immigration status of Latinos in the area under the guise of investigating possible traffic violations," he said. "They are flagrantly violating the rights of innocent people by detaining lawful immigrants and targeting anyone who appears to be of Hispanic origin."

If they’d simply deport any illegals that they find, then there’d be less reason to stop Latinos more frequently.

“...targeting people based on their race is illegal...”

#####

‘kay.

But NOT targeting people based on race-based crime statistics is insane.

And the breakdown by race regarding crime is ridiculously skewed toward “persons of color” as the perpetrators.

Good for the OHP! Personally, I doubt that officers are experts in detecting forged documents so if someone gets pulled over and are detained until their documents are verified, so be it. If you don't want to be detained, stop doing whatever it was that caused you to get pulled over in the first place.

I’m so sick of this. Anyone who has driven in Mexico knows they drive like maniacs down there, so when they come up here and get pulled over for their driving, the police are “profiling.” Malarkey!

In the early nineties the federal highway patrol in Mexico ran a national license check. Not only did the majority of the drivers not have licenses, it was discovered that forty percent of the police doing the checking did not have drivers licenses.

If the aclu is upset about Ashtabula, wait until they find out about Brecksville!

The ACLU should be considered an “Un-American Activity”.

Perhaps if it was enough hassle to the rest of the community, peer pressure would bring the race/crime stats back into the “norm”.

I think it already IS a hassle to the rest of the community.

I read a study once that indicated law-abiding inner city blacks were among the staunchest proponents of racial-profiling to eliminate crime in their neighborhoods. These folks know good and well that it is not white kids from the suburbs causing havoc in the ‘hood.

Yes, peer pressure would be great, but the actual demographic that would be ideal to implement this, strong young to middle-aged males, by their absence from the black nuclear family, are the very cause of this cultural problem in the first place.

They are absent because of gov’t policy, and I believe that it’s intentional.

The gov’t pays women to have kids without a father around.

OK, fine. Start targeting the ACLU instead. The ACLU has done more damage to America than any other organization I can think of. I'm NOT including the DNC. They are a criminal organization. LOL
