LONDON (Reuters) - The cost of efforts to avoid dangerous global warming may be 170 percent higher than 2007 estimates, a report for the U.N.'s climate agency said on Thursday.
The report comes four days before the U.N. leads a fresh round of talks in Poland to agree a successor to the Kyoto Protocol in ongoing negotiations marred by squabbles over who should bear the cost of fighting climate change.
The U.N. report cited research by the International Energy Agency (IEA), energy adviser to 28 countries, and others which showed growing capital costs especially in the energy sector.
"The increased investment needed is entirely due to higher capital costs for energy supply facilities," it said.
"This increases the scale of the challenge to generate additional investment and financial flows," said the study, titled "Investment and financial flows to address climate change: an update."
Growing capital costs are partly a result of unprecedented demand for gear such as wind turbines driven by climate and energy security policies.
Thursday's report was commissioned for the U.N.'s climate change secretariat which leads the December 1-12 talks in Poznan, Poland.
The new report will add to concerns that a multi-trillion dollar bailout of the global economy in the past two months may have diverted too much cash away from the climate fight.

It’s more like “Global Fleecing”
A flexible tube for CO2 is pictured before the first official run of
the mini plant "Schwarze Pumpe" in Spremberg, Germany,
September 9, 2008.
I take it you will not be giving carbon credit gift certificates this season? lol
It’s a ‘ponzi’ scheme like none before.
Ol’ SnakeOil bites again.
I can just see a global bureaucrat getting a woody as he reads this. It’s not a pretty picture.
If you seriously believe in global warming, you’ll build nukes and lots of them. Its carbon free power all the way.
If you’re not going to build nukes, then you’re just using “global warming” as a pretext to foist a huge money laundering scam on whole countries; that, and to justify the transfer of whole industries to China.
“Kyoto” is the “send your factory to China” treaty. And carbon credits are the biggest scam in all of recorded history; they will make Oil for Food look like penny slots at the Indian Casino.
Temperature +12, sunspot number 0. Would be unfortunate to have to abandon the climate fight before untold more trillions are wasted on it.
If they just ask the US Congress for $700 billion, then it can be free for everyone. Congress can get that, easy.
Not to mention global warming cannot be avoided so the cost is a complete and total waste of time, money, and energy....
Kyoto is the send your factory to China treaty. And carbon credits are the biggest scam in all of recorded history; they will make Oil for Food look like penny slots at the Indian Casino.
Can anyone tell me how (a piece of paper) a carbon credit reduces so called pollution?
What you wanna bet that next year they will find they were low on their estimates by a factor of three also?
Cheers
I’ve noticed that the word “dangerous” is starting to be used more and more as in “dangerous climate change” and “dangerous global warming.”
This wording just comes from James Hansen, he signs off all his papers with ... “there will be dangerous climate change if ...”
Can we stop using this before it becomes part of the common lexicon of words used to describe global warming.
Or NONE!
