well... the way i remember it was, marriage is a Church rite and not a secular one, and with all the howling about separation of Church and State, i'd think they'd kinda stick to having a domestic partnership not unlike thousands of heterosexual couples do in this country for many of the same legal benefits without some of the pesky others.
