SIERRA VISTA Sundays protest against alleged torture training on Fort Huachuca brought a little money into the Sierra Vista citys coffers, but it cost much more for city-provided security.
According to records at the Sierra Vista Parks and Leisure Services, a Tucson resident paid $750 to rent Veterans Memorial Park for the day.
Around 10 a.m., more than 150 protesters began to show up at the park for a nearly four-hour rally before walking west on Fry Boulevard to the corner of Fry and Buffalo Soldier Trail to demonstrate outside the posts Main Gate.
The Sierra Vista Police Department had nearly three dozen officers on overtime duty, of which 31 were eligible for overtime pay, said Officer Tracy Grady, the departments public information officer.
Except for the four or five commanders and lieutenants, who are not authorized overtime pay, the cost to the city for the 31 patrol officers who will be paid overtime came to $8,020, she said.
A small number of Arizona Department of Public Safety officers also assisted in providing security and crowd control for the event, Grady said.
Grady said she did not know if they were on overtime status.
