Pete Sessions(TX) wins leadership role in GOP campaign efforts (New NRCC Chairman)

House Republicans installed Dallas Rep. Pete Sessions at the helm of their campaign arm (National Republican Congressional Committee) this afternoon, betting he can round up the cash and candidates they’ll need to climb out of a deepening hole in the next elections. That makes a pair of Texans responsible for GOP efforts to boost their ranks in both the House and Senate. On Tuesday, Sen. John Cornyn won the chairmanship of the Senate GOP campaign committee (National Republican Senatorial Committee - FR Thread) a coincidence that reflects Texas’ status as a mother lode of Republican votes and donors, an increasing rarity after the inroads President-elect Barack Obama made in states where Democrats had long been dormant. “Republicans will have my tireless and steadfast resolve to win 218 seats in the House of Representatives,” Mr. Sessions said. “Rebuilding the Republican majority begins today.” Two years ago, Mr. Sessions lost a three-way race for chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee to Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma.

Today, with Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio backing Mr. Sessions, Mr. Cole pulled out of his bid for another term. That ended a tenure marred by a 20-seat loss on Nov. 4-- a big setback, thought smaller than some had feared. “I don’t blame, and I don’t think anybody in there blames Tom Cole for the showing,” said one Sessions supporter, Rep. Jeff Flake of Arizona. “He understands what the party needs, and he’s a good people person, and he’s a good fund-raiser,” Mr. Flake said of Mr. Sessions. “He’s a good pick. If historical patterns hold true, the Republicans are likely to bounce back somewhat in the 2010 elections. But it would be extraordinary to overcome the 80-seat deficit they’ll face when the new Congress convenes Jan. 6.

Well, with some distance from the albatross of the Iraq war around their neck and the assured failure of Keynesian economics to revive the economy, you can expect to see a lot of blue-dog seats up for grabs in 2010 if the Republicans can revive their brand.

Listening to Mort Kondrake tonight and I darn near puked. He must be the most DENSE sob to ever walk.

He was saying these changes signaled a move to the right, d’oh, as if that’s a bad thing. He mentioned the 170 (I think) remaining repubs in the house are mostly very red (Right-wing).

Cnn’t these idiots in the -R party get a F’in klue!

Look bub, I fully support the war and still do but to claim that the war wasn’t a major reason we got drubbed in 2006 and continued to get drubbed in 2008 is a bit silly at this point. The main reason the youth vote went to Obama is because they are anti-war and the RINO Rockefellers turned hard against the war.

I meant no disrespect to you Ma'am, but most people here have supported our troops and winning the war, long before you decided to give us your insight.

Thank you Ma'am.

I suppose you would have us believe that all that spending the republicans were responsible for, had absolutely nothing with the 2006 loses?

The base is pi$$ed at the morons they sent to congress because they started acting like the Dems they hate!

Simple!

I was so happy to see this. Cole pulled ad money from candidates at the last minute especially Freshman Congressman in tight races. His running of the NRCC was horrible as he hired people that should never have been put in that organization and took care of his good old boy consultants so they got their cut first.
