Barack Obama has pledged to restore America's ailing economy and its "moral stature in the world".
He made the comments during his first major televised interview since being voted America's 44th president earlier this month.
The President-elect told CBS programme 60 Minutes he would deliver a clear break in foreign policy from the Bush administration.
Mr Obama confirmed reports he will pull troops out of Iraq and limit the offshoots of the "war on terror", including bringing an end to the notorious Guantanamo Bay.
He said the moves were an effort to "regain America's moral stature in the world".
But he reiterated the country's desire to crush al Qaeda in Afghanistan and hunt down Osama bin Laden, a directive described as "critical" to US security.
However, the Obama administration's number one priority will remain domestic: repairing the US economy through financial stimulus packages and tighter regulation of the financial markets.
Well, he did belong to a Christian church for 20 years, so maybe he can use the tenets and lessons he learned as a Christian, oh wait.

Exactly what Hoover tried, only those measures created a depression. Maybe that is what he wants, do you suppose?

I know if there's one person who I trust talking about our moral stature, it's someone who said he'd take public financing limits but didn't, who claimed he had no idea he was in an anti-semetic church for 20 years, has dealings with indicted criminals and is for crushing the skulls of babies and starving those who survive abortions.
Including US support internationally for abortion (baby killing), including forced abortion in China, all with tax payer dollars. "Moral stature" I don't think so.

I believe “moral” and “Obama” are mutually exclusive terms.

He really doesn't have a clue does he? How could so many voters elect a man who does not have the interests of the USA at heart?
Moral? This a—clown doesn’t have a moral molecule in his body. He is a cold, robotic character who couldn’t even keep a recent promise to abide by campaign finance limits.
His only life’s aim is to acquire power for its own sake, and to reward his backers. His backers are a coalition of the most perverse people on the planet.
I’m fairly new to this site, and I’m still not sure if it’s the right place for me, as someone who can’t stand George Bush (Jr.), but sees himself as a conservative.
I’m no fan of Obama. I do hope that he closes Gitmo and tries to stop the torture, rendition flights, mass spying on us citizens, etc that Bush was into. I hope to God though, that he really puts a lot of pressure on the Taliban in Afghanistan. I don’t know that I trust him to do this though - I guess we’ll see. I really hope he goes after the terrorists, but I hoped Bush would too.
Dear Leader won’t stop those things, he’ll just redirect them towards conservatives...

How does one stop what does not exist? Gitmo, exists of course but most of what you have written existed only in the minds of those at the NY Slimes. If you hope Gitmo is closed is there another location that you have in mind for terrorists? Should we bring them inside the US? Have you thought the logistics out of such a change? You think there is any space for them somewhere near where you live?
So what is your explanation of why we haven't been attacked again in the past seven years?
