Obama election spurs race crimes around country

Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama." Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.

Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America.

From California to Maine, police have documented a range of alleged crimes, from vandalism and vague threats to at least one physical attack. Insults and taunts have been delivered by adults, college students and second-graders.

There have been "hundreds" of incidents since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes.

One was in Snellville, Ga., where Denene Millner said a boy on the school bus told her 9-year-old daughter the day after the election: "I hope Obama gets assassinated." That night, someone trashed her sister-in-law's front lawn, mangled the Obama lawn signs, and left two pizza boxes filled with human feces outside the front door, Millner said.

She described her emotions as a combination of anger and fear.

Funny, my daughter has been catching crap at school for being a McCain supporter, and so has the daughter of a friend who goes to the high school I used to work at.

Oh and let me add this .....an article the other day was about the FBI looking into some racial hate sites....they went on to investigate the so-called white racial hate sites and found BLACKS were putting the sites on the Web.

The racism comes from BOTH SIDES, and in my experience over the last year, I’ve seen much more racism from the Black community than the White.

I have two teenagers here in Alaska, its a daily thing at school to make chants against Obama, the whole school does it.

Anything about Obama is ridiculed and the children of parents that did support him quite literally run around in fear.

I never told my kids what to do, they are on the internet, they watch youtube and they are not the gullible youth of decades past.

I received an email, the day after the election, from an otherwise intelligent female friend of mine. She indicated that much (anti-black) racial hatred was spewing forth, including the burning of black churches.

Since I am a news junkie, I was taken aback by the black church burning comment. I had read nothing of it.

So I spent a couple of hours searching for news stories about black church burnings to see if I had simply missed the stories.

I kept finding stories about black church burnings during the 1990’s. Apparently the media hyped this as an epidemic, which turned out to be a media hoax.

The only current reference I could find, was a story about a church under construction in Massachusetts, which had been burned. Guess who were the only sites carrying the story? Kos, HufPo and DU.

People should be careful where they get their news.

I think that this is quite true. Their Obama-loving parents tell their schoolchildren to do it because they think it will make Republicans look bad.

Just like most hate crimes, most of this is a put up by the liberals.
