I got a tax filing extension this year and paid the IRS, as required by law, on 4/15. Since I am self-employed, I could not figure my tax to the penny until my return was complete. Therefore, on 10/15 I filed my full return and sent them a check for $555 to cover my extra taxes and penalties.”

I have been self- employed for over 35 years. I always managed to get my return done for the April 15 filing date.
Don’t know what kind of work you do that you need the extra 6 months...
But- are you preparing your taxes on your own with the computer (games) stuff? Or do you have a tax accountant?

If you have a copy of the cancelled check- take it-—not the original, along with a letter from your bank that states what you paid and when. You will have to take this to the local IRS office, IMO, as the telephone twits have no authority.
Do not let them get away with anything.

Thanks for the information. I used a CPA, so if they don’t fix this right away I’ll have to ask for his advice. I got another notice Friday that they had charged me another 64 cents in interest. So far it is just over $2, and I would like even that back, but they won’t recalculate it. If I owed them $2, they’d charge interest and penalties and inflate it to a significant sum until I paid them. Apparently, they haven’t programmed their computers to do anything but take.
