With NC likely gaining a district after the next census, we've got to get control of this state's legislature. The Dems could easily gerrymander themselves another freebie district and turn two or three of our GOP districts highly competitive.

Clary, Floyd cement wins following provisional ballot count Comments 0 | Recommend 0 Friday, Nov 14 2008, 4:52 pm Graham Cawthon SHELBY - For 10 days, Debbie Clary (R) was referred to as the presumptive winner of the N.C. Senate District 46 seat. Numbers were too close to call until Friday when provisional ballot numbers were added to the mix. The final count concluded that Clary's margin of victory over Keith Melton (D) was too high for Melton to request a recount. A recount can be requested if the margin of victory falls within 1 percent. "It was a tough campaign," Melton said Friday. "The final votes are the facts." Clary was unable to be reached for comment Friday afternoon. According to Cleveland County Board of Elections Director Debra Blanton, Clary received 22,576 votes in Cleveland County and 13,483 votes in Rutherford County. Melton's numbers came out to 20,534 votes in Cleveland and 14,804 in Rutherford. Final count: Clary's 36,059 to Melton's 35,338. "I appreciate the supporters in Cleveland and Rutherford County both that worked so hard to help me carry out this campaign," Melton said. Whether he intends to run for office again, he said time would tell. "I'm not going to say for sure at this point," he said. Blanton said the provisional ballots didn't change the margin between the two. "The difference stayed about the same," she said, "a little over 700 votes." Provisional ballots also didn't turn the tide for the N.C. 110th House seat. Pearl Burris Floyd (R) and Davy Lowman (D) traded victories in Cleveland and Gaston counties but Floyd's final numbers were enough to prevent a recount. In Cleveland County, Lowman took 5,432 votes to Floyd's 3,720. In Gaston, Floyd took 10,963 votes to Lowman's 8,741.
Unusual: Forst time I’m aware of a GOP win in a recount (exception FL 2000, when Gore tried to steal the show) since 1992.

no. secretary of state is a democrat (she actually beat richard petty in ‘96). County is controlled by democrats.
I never heard of Clary, Floyd cement, so I came here thinking maybe someone had bought out Cemex or LaFarge.
