Inspired by Barack Obama, the French first lady and other leading figures say it's high time for France to stamp out racism and shake up a white political and social elite that smacks of colonial times.
A manifesto published Sunday urges affirmative action-like policies and other steps to turn French ideals of equality into reality for millions of blacks, Arabs and other alienated minorities.
"Our prejudices are insidious," Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, a singer and wife of President Nicolas Sarkozy, said in an interview with the Journal du Dimanche newspaper, which published the manifesto. She said she hoped the "Obama effect" would reshape French society.
Nations across Europe rejoiced over Obama's victory, seeing it as a triumph for American democracy and a world weary of President George W. Bush. But Obama's election also illustrated an uncomfortable truth: how far European countries with big minority populations have to go getting nonwhites into positions of power.
Grass-roots groups in France and Britain are trying to turn Obama's election into electoral gains for minorities at home. Sunday's manifesto suggests France's elites are taking notice, too.
"The election of Barack Obama highlights via a cruel contrast the shortcomings of the French Republic, and the distance that separates us from a country whose citizens knew how to go beyond the racial question and elect a man who happens to be black as president," the appeal said.
The manifesto was written by Yazid Sabeg, a French self-made millionaire whose parents were Algerian immigrants, and signed by politicians from the left and right and other public figures.
Obama is extremely popular in France, yet blacks and other minorities are nearly invisible in national or local politics here. The lower house of parliament has 555 members from the French mainland; just one is black.

Whoever heard of such a thing? French government officials looking like Frenchmen? Mon dieu!
Perhaps Mme. Sarkozy can lead a protest in Damascus or Riyadh to insist that Christians have equality in worship?
Possibly time for another revolution in France. They always seem to get good results when they have one of those.
But s*** for brains.
And I doubt she’ll ever live in a black or Muslim neighborhood. She’d beat it out of town before it ever came to that.
Why do good men let themselves get ruined or suckered by liberal women whom only have their good looks to live by?
That brings up another good point. “The manifesto was written by Yazid Sabeg.” That good old Muslim influence again. Hopefully, Sarkozy will just humor the little woman for a bit and let it quietly drop.
But it would be easier for her to just leave and set up housekeeping in Nigeria. Maybe she'd be happier there.
But like another poster said, fat chance of her living in one of the "minority" neighborhoods in France or anywhere else.
Molto chic! And naturally, instead of ending racism, it will obtain the opposite result, because the heart cannot be legislated. Let la signora Sarkozy go un-hijabbed to the Muslim banlieus and try to convince the Muslims that Liberté, Fraternité and Humidité are more valuable or for that matter can even co-exist with the teachings of the most holy Koran! Let her go alone and unescorted.
I wish - just for once - the sermons for ending racism were given to the people who are really racist. Oddly enough, you will find that the majority are not white!
America just ended white racism by surrendering to a black racist. “I had a dream” didn’t work nearly as well as “goddam America.”
There is hardly a god left in France anyway, but I can imagine: “Vive la France? Non non non a mort la France!” That should work real well. It worked in the good ole US of A! That and esperance et changement!

Or maybe it’s time to love your France, protect and cherish her, save her... and ignore the urgings of the Italian fashion model alla putanesca and the satyro un po’ putaniere.
