An estimated 2,000 protestors gathered near the Salt Lake LDS Temple this evening, carrying signs defending gay marriage and attacking Mormon officials for the church's active campaigning on behalf of California's Proposition 8.
Former Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson was at the center of the crowd gathered at City Creek Park with chants of "Yes, we can."
Across the street, a group of fewer than 50 stood in defense of the church's support of the successful ballot measure, which effectively bans same-sex marriage in California. "The people voted," they shouted at the protesters. "You are intolerant."
Tonight's demonstration in Salt Lake City followed a similar protest staged Thursday at the LDS Temple in Westwood, Calif., near Los Angeles.
Morgan Smith of Salt Lake City, who identified himself as an active Mormon, hopes the protests will encourage The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to show greater love for its gay and lesbian members."
He demonstrated alongside Salt Lake City's David Nielsen who said he hopes the group's actions result in "more exposure and more shame to my church."

These people fail to understand that the purpose of existence of the church is to strengthen the family. They have no comprehension of the resources this church can and will bring to bear, if required, to stand against this sort of attack against the family. Their protest is irrelevant and will be ignored, as it should be.
Agreed.
Yep, just what I want to do to my church -- heap a lot of shame on them. I guess it is easier to shame a church than to leave and find a new church/congregation.
I was there. The mormon temple is a half mile from my house, so I walked over there... Talked to a few cops and watched it all go down. They blocked Santa Monica Blvd, which is a major artery here and people we pissed off. They also blocked wilshire at some point...

Geoffrey, a student at UCLA and regular Rod 2.0 reader, joined the massive protest outside the Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Westwood. Geoffrey was called the n-word at least twice.
It was like being at a klan rally except the klansmen were wearing Abercrombie polos and Birkenstocks. YOU N*GGER, one man shouted at men. If your people want to call me a F*GGOT, I will call you a n*gger. Someone else said same thing to me on the next block near the temple...me and my friend were walking, he is also gay but Korean, and a young WeHo clone said after last night the n*ggers better not come to West Hollywood if they knew what was BEST for them."
Nothing like distraught fags. :-)

The hell with the gays and lesbos. Let them get “married” if they want. But the state doesn’t have to give its imprimatur to it, e.g., the state doesn’t have to spend taxpayer money for “marriage” partner benefits.!!!
Of all the places in the country for the gays to strut their stuff!!!
Sounds like hate crimes, to me. . . .
