SEOUL, South Korea (AP) South Korea said Thursday that a free trade agreement with the U.S. stands as is, resolving to resist possible calls to redo the deal by the new administration of President-elect Barack Obama.
"I repeat that there will be no renegotiation, whether it's automobiles or any other issue," said Trade Minister Kim Jong-hoon, according to a transcript of an interview with local radio network KBS. "We will respond by sticking to such a stance."
Kim's comments came one day after his deputy Lee Hye-min told reporters that reconsidering the already signed agreement would be like opening a "Pandora's box" and "could damage the balance reached when the deal was concluded." Kim served as South Korea's chief negotiator for the U.S. agreement before becoming trade minister.
The accord to slash tariffs on goods and services is the largest for the U.S. since the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico and the biggest ever for South Korea. NAFTA, signed in 1993, took effect the following year.

O thinks the world is his playground, but there other kids don’t seem to want to play nice. I cannot believe this lightweight is our president. His theory books at Harvard didn’t cover the things he is going to be faced with, and it is going to get ugly.
The Messiah wants to start trade wars. I wonder if the overseas masses will cheer when the Messiah tries to strong arm other nations into renegotiating trade agreements. I wonder if our trading partners will retaliate as the rats provide enormous subsidies for some of our non competitive industries.
ignoring the entire obama thing, is this agreement net positive for US citizens? My view is that multinational corporations like free trade zones/agreements/treaties as they eliminate tariffs between various markets. Multinationals are not US citizens, nor do they think like a US citizen.
freedom is always good which is why obama is against it
trade wars lead to real wars
is free trade always good for citizens of the US? What if it benefits people or merchants living in far-away place?
nobody benefits when the govt tries to make economic decisions. If trade from a certain country didn’t benefit anyone then people would choose, on their own, not to buy anything from that country.
Not sure how things will be after 4 years of obamma lamma ding dong but right now I think we can take South Korea.
if the economy falls apart the likely scenario is North korea taking over the South.
The U.S. has propped up the South Korean govt. for what? Nearly 60 years? Just when is it time to take a step back and bring about half of the 35,000 troops we have there home.
Just when is it time to even the trading field?
