Forget Claire Huxtable. She could be a real-life role model for black women.
Throughout this long, tense election, everyone has focused on the presidential candidates and how they'll change America. Rightly so. But selfishly, I'm more fascinated by Michelle Obama and what she might be able to do, not just for this country, but for me as an African-American woman. As the potential First Lady, she would have the world's attention. And that means that for the first time people will have a chance to get up close and personal with the type of African-American woman they so rarely see.
Usually, the lives of black women go largely unexamined. The prevailing theory seems to be that we're all hot-tempered single mothers who can't keep a man and, according to CNN's "Black in America," documentary, those of us who aren't street-walking crack addicts are on the verge of dying from AIDS. As writer Rebecca Walker put it on her Facebook page: "CNN should call me next time they really want to show diversity and meet real black women that nobody seems to talk about.''
Like Walker, I too know more than my share of black women who have little in common with the black female images I see in the media. My "sistafriends" are mostly college educated, in healthy, productive relationships and have a major aversion to sassy one-liners. They are teachers, doctors and business owners. Of course, there are those of us who never get the chance to pull it together. And we accept and embrace thembut their stories can't and shouldn't be the only ones told.

Good lord. Barack’s married to Angela Davis.
“Usually, the lives of black women go largely unexamined.”
Um..........I think this “author” needs to do some time in front of a tv watching Jerry Springer. ‘Nuff said.
When they learn how she really hates other races, specifically white people, Obamanation becomes a one termer. But then again, when the US see that Obamanation is a hater of other races, he will be a one termer.
Ive done my last cookin’ show you dumb MF’s!
What about Queen Oprah?
This is bs. This woman is just stirring the pot.
I do not believe the Obama’s will ever enter the White House. I may be wrong but I don’t think the American people haven’t seen what these people are like. Their backgrounds are not something we are proud of. Both were involved with communist organizations and when you look at Americas history, many of our sons and daughters died to keep communism out of our country. What a slap in the face it would be for them if we allowed communism in our White House.
What Michelle Can Teach Us
Not a ____ thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why does the author want a furious, resentful, castrating woman to represent her? I sure don’t want Hillary Clinton representing me!
Or how about those “Real Housewives of Atlanta”. Yikes!
Yes, There is nothing this woman can teach me.
Just hope the white house does not turn into a MTV camp for their rapper friends
Haven’t seen that one, and I’m thinkin’ I’ll take a pass on it.
~</;o)
Why does this have to be about her race? Why can’t we just look at the content of her character?
Angela Davis. I’ve been saying the same thing since day one. This is one angry black woman!
I resisted it but it is in fact very revealing, and not flattering to those “housewives”.
Right. Let’s vote as an anthropological experiment. Not me, thanks.
Black people really should not want these two as their shining stars to shed light on their community.
Going to be very bad examples.
That "theory" is proven out by the statistics.
"Almost 70 percent of black kids grow up living with one parent (and that it almost always mom.)"
