RALEIGH - As part of a big push by both the Barack Obama and John McCain presidential campaigns, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin visited Raleigh on Saturday evening to hold a campaign rally at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds.

When she arrived on Saturday afternoon, Sarah Palin was greeted at the airport by a group of children who attend the Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities.

Palin, whose son Trig has Down syndrome, spent five minutes talking with the relatives of the children as well as leaders of the center. It was an unusually long disembarkment, as it usually takes only a minute or so for Palin to greet dignitaries and get into the SUV to go to the event.

The children that Palin were speaking to were David Farnsworth, age 13, who has Saethre-Chotzen Syndrome; Eleanor Flora, age 2, who has Down syndrome; Quinn Yaudes, age 16; Julia Diokno, 18 months old, who has Down syndrome; and Deuce Slater, age 4, who has cerebral palsy. Their parents and close relatives were also at the airport.

Other guests at the airport included US Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) and his wife, Brooke.

Palin arrived on the Straight Talk II and headed straight to the Exposition Center at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.

Before her arrival, former Senator Bob Dole spoke on behalf of the McCain campaign and Senator Elizabeth Dole's re-election bid. His wife was busy appearing at an event in Rowan County, home of her native Salisbury.

I was there, near the front, and I can tell you: she was absolutely fantastic. I’ve never been in a crowd that was more fired up; not at any political event, not even a rock concert!

Before Sarah spoke, they had a local plumber (Mike from Cary, NC) talk to the crowd, and boy, did he fire things up! He gave a talk about the value of hard work, and told his story of coming up from a your apprentice to being a trainer of plumbers across the country. He spoke to the media directly, saying, “I don’t want a handout! And get your greedy government hands off of my money!”

We were 7 people back from the front row, and she autographed my copy of National Review (the one with her picture on the front as “The One”)! She stayed about 20 minutes after her speech, talking to supporters and giving autographs.

And there were SO MANY nice people there!
