Obama Talks Redistribution Of Wealth With MTV
MTV ^ | 11/02/08 | MTV

Posted on 11/02/2008 7:20:59 PM PST by markedmannerf

Sway: Our next question is from Matt from Iowa: "If your desire is to spread the wealth around, what incentive is there for me to try to work hard? If I am only going to get more taken away from me, the more money I make, why wouldn't I just slide into a life of relaxation and let rich people take care of me? And a lot of people are asking similar questions, and I wanted you to specify. What does this mean exactly?"

Obama: What is amazing to me is this whole notion that somehow everybody is just looking out for themselves. I mean, the fact is, we just talked about student loans. When young people who have the drive and the skill to go to college can't afford to go to college, how do you think we pay for scholarships or loan programs? That money doesn't grow on trees. It's got to come from somewhere, and the attitude that I have is that, if we want to grow our economy, the way it grows is from the bottom up. You don't just give tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires. What you do is make sure the tax code is fair.

{...}

Back in the 1990s, we created more millionaires, more billionaires, because the economy was growing, everything was strong, at every income bracket, people were doing well. So this idea, that somehow everybody is just on their own and shouldn't be concerned about other people who are coming up behind them, that's the kind of attitude that I want to end when I am president.

When I went to college it was 100% on my dime - no student loans. I worked a full time job and supported a family and NO I didn't expect some rich dude to give money because I needed it.

If America puts this guy in the WH they deserve everything he bestows on this country, and I can only pray there will be enough left to salvage in 2010 and/or 2012.

Maybe I’m a bit stupid, but how does one get a “tax break” if they already don’t pay income taxes?

Every time the guy talks about this stuff, I know what (generally) is going to come out of his mouth. That the American public is even supporting this guy an inch is actually very scary.

If this guy is elected, with such clearly ambitious goals to take money from just about everyone and do with it as he seems to please is truly disturbing.

Congrats on working hard and making it through college and making a better life and career for yourself and family.

We have lost the idea that college students can or should work their way through college. Yes college is expensive, which is one reason why many students used to work part-time jobs while in college. Now there is an attitude that students shouldn’t be working while in college, but should be entitled to endless amounts of aid because college is costly.

Amen, I did the same thing and worked two jobs during college.

With the influx of “student loans” came the increases in tuition.

Similar to the medical profession. Increased insurance benefits, increase in prices.

With the cost today of paying college, I don’t know how anyone can cover the cost.

Paying for socialist profs like ayers, dorn, etc. is breaking the system.

You don't just give tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires

Yeah, those Dozenaires need to have more of their own loopholes, too, right?

It apparently has never occured to Sen. Obama that in capitalist societies, people save and invest and then help their families and others with the proceeds. If you don't give it to government commisars, you're not giving?

I'd like to think he is being dishonest, but I actually think he's naively swallowed the whole marxist model he was taught at the Ivy League. New ideas? Change? Bah! This has been tried a million times.

What was Clinton's plan for economic growth? Riding on the coattails of the Reagan-Bush economy (that had already come out of the recession) and an internet stock bubble and Enron scams. The market had collapsed starting in 1998 and by 2001 when Bush was in office things weren't so hot. 9-11-2001 didn't help. But things recovered.

Barry Soeroto doesn't explain how his redistribution is going to create jobs or production. It'll just give those who don't work more money to spend at fast food restaurants and at Wally World on consumer goods they don't need. That won't fix the economy, especially as taxes go up and goods and services ALSO go up in price.

DUMBA$$.

What is amazing to me is this whole notion that somehow everybody is just looking out for themselves.

Most people with a brain get over that when they learn the hard way. Maybe if one is a member of an entitled minority, and therefore gets preferential treatment for their entire life, one will always be amazed at how things really are for the rest of us.

Yes Barack, people are looking out for themselves and for their families. Policy should be such that when people do that, it helps them as individuals as well as society as a whole.
