VALLEJO -- Vallejo's city council gave preliminary approval Tuesday night on a wide-ranging package of cuts to bridge a $2.5 million funding gap in the city's budget.
The cuts include a 10 percent salary reduction for City Manager Joe Tanner, who earns $361,000 a year, and staffing cuts in the police and fire departments. In addition, all city employees except sworn police and fire fighters will take two unpaid days off before the fiscal year ends June 30.
The council, which voted unanimously in favor of the cuts, is scheduled to give final approval at its next meeting Nov. 6. The action requires two votes because the cuts would amend the budget.
Union approval is not required for employees' two-day work furlough because the city is in bankruptcy,

I lived in Vallejo in 1963-1964. A lot of my relatives still live in Napa next door. I went back about ten years ago.
Talk about a tale of two cities! Napa has gone upscale and Vallejo is doing a sort of Tijuana meets the south side of Chicago” sort of thing.
