Can any of you verify this? I know you're out there, I can see your medals shining in the sun...

If it's true, we probably should have gotten this out in big box car letters earlier.

Too bad she’s not responsible for verifying the eligibility of Presidential candidates on the ballot in her state.

All of the stuff regarding Alaska is correct. Alaska is unique among American states for the role its National Guard plays. There are several reasons for that, but the two primary reasons are its strategic location and its distance from the Continental United States. Because of its strategic location, we have based some of our most sensitive military assets there for decades. There are bases in the middle of no where with some of the most sensitive radar and electronic monitoring equipment in the world. Places like Eareckson Air Station, Clear Air Force Station and the 49th Missile Defense Battalion at Fort Greeley are just part of the picture and still conduct missions that can't really be talked about. The anti-ballistic missile missiles based in Alaska are some of the most technologically advanced weapons in the world. And because the Alaskan National Guard mans their facilities and systems as part of our homeland defense, the Governor of Alaska is directly involved in supporting that mission. Like all governors, Palin is the Commander in Chief of all the National Guard units operating in her state. Due to the senstitivities of the technology involved, it isn't appropriate to discuss or even really know what level of information she is regularly briefed on, but it is safe to assume that she is more informed about our level of readiness in the homeland defense mission than any other governor in the nation.

Most Americans are unaware of the strategic importance (and vulnerability) of Alaska, but there is a reason why we have always based our best and newest fighter aircraft there, why they have remained on permanent alert in Alaska for decades, why our most advanced radar technology is located there, why some of the most complex electronic reconaissance aircraft in the world regularly sit alert there, and why the Russians regularly fly their long range bombers up to and sometimes into Alaskan airspace (over 20 times in the last two years).

It would be incorrect to say that Sarah Palin would make key decisions regarding the defense of the United States. No governor does and that is not their role. But every governor is intimately familiar with the capability and status of the National Guard forces assigned to them. Because of Alaska's unique strategic mission, Palin has more responsiblity in that respect than any other governor (and certainly more than any Congressman) in the nation.

Thank you. I forwarded your response and that of Rokke to the person who asked if it was true. Hopefully, more will see these responses before Nov. 4. Thanks, again.
