Fr. Bernard Digal has died after a slow agony of more than two months. The religious, brutally beaten by Hindu fundamentalists the night of August 25, has died two months later, this evening at 9:25 local time, from the serious injuries he suffered in the assault.

On Saturday, October 25, a feverish Fr. Digal was taken to St. Thomas Hospital in Chennai, in Tamil Nadu; the doctors operated on him to remove a blood clot from his brain, caused by the beating on the night he was attacked. Yesterday, his lungs collapsed and he fell into a coma.

This morning, the bishop of the diocese gave him the anointing of the sick; Raphael Cheenath, archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneshwar, was at his deathbed. The religious was given a respirator to keep him alive, but his body gave out.

Prayers for the repose of his beautiful soul.

Hindus believe in karma. They have now guaranteed a bloody, deadly beating for themselves.

I read there is more Christian persecution now than at any time in history. I feel so helpless when I read these stories.

They say St. Thomas the Apostle evangelized India.

The Catholic faith has been there a long time and also in Sri Lanka.

“Only three churches in the world have been built over the tomb of an Apostle of Jesus Christ.

One is the Basilica of Saint Peter, which covers the tomb of St Peter in Rome. The second is the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, which was built over the tomb of St James in Spain, and then there is the St Thomas Cathedral basilica, which was erected over the tomb of St Thomas in Mylapore, Chennai, in South India.”

Fr Bernard is dead. killed as a result of his faithful witness to Jesus Christ. If you do not like this writer, at least have the decency ro respect the dead

Who is saying anything about Fr Bernard? And how exactly is it that calling on to the credibility of the author and the article is disrespectful to the dead?

“Fr Bernard is dead. killed as a result of his faithful witness to Jesus Christ.”

Again no disrespect to Fr Bernard and his service to his faith but he didnt die because of his observance of his faith but because of a type of illness caused by mosquitoes if you go by what that article has to say. It clearly says he “survived” the attack on him. I will concede the fact that he died in service of his faith but it wasnt the cause of his death.
