They were never on “our” side, that is why when McCain chose Palin it signaled that the conservatives owned the future of the party, meaning that the rinos had lost.
That is why they jumped ship.
They never were on our side. They always were just Democrats that didn't want to run in a crowded primary, so they filed as Republicans. 2006 got rid of a ton of them. They didn't just "cross the aisle," they lived on the Dem's couch every day.
