Gallup-No Increase in Proportion of First-Time Voters

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup finds 13% of registered voters saying they will vote for president for the first time in 2008. That matches the figure Gallup found in its final 2004 pre-election poll.

The current data are based on interviews with more than 2,700 registered voters as part of Oct. 17-19 Gallup Poll Daily tracking. Gallup asked these voters a question it had asked in its 2004 election polling: whether this would be the first time they had voted in a presidential election, or whether they had voted for president before. Despite much discussion of the possibility of large numbers of new voters in 2008, the percentage of "first time" voters in Gallup polling this election cycle is no higher than it was at approximately the same time in 2004.

It depends on what portion of them are Obama voters.

If this is true, GOP beats DEM in turnout.

Let’s see if they change their weighting. Pardon me while I sit over here doubting it.

My favorite quote this election:

“We have a name for politicians who rely on new voters or the youth vote:... LOSERS”

Yet...every single poll out their, including the Gallup poll, assumes that voter turnout this year will be historically huge based on all the new voters who have registered.

So based on their own polling...do you suppose Gallup will change it's polling assumptions? Nahhh.

Gallup should now change it’s methodology, I hope to see a big McCain surge.

I have a visual of busloads of Mickey Mouses, Dallas Cowboys, and Jive Turkeys pulling up at polling places nationwide.

Once again we find ourselves facing the fact that this election will be surpisingly conventional.

PARTY ID will be way tighter than the pollsters are projecting. This is a deadlocked race with McCain probably holding a 1.5%-2% lead with about 5-7% of the population undecided.

Those 5-7% are undecided because they aren’t sold on Obama or don’t want to report their vote.

If republican base and evangelical vote turns out, we win. If we don’t we won’t. African American high turnout will be cancelled out by Reagan Dems who won’t vote for Socialism. McCain will win PA, but we’ll have to wait all night to have it called.

Well, you gotta admit that those jive turkeys do have a certain style.

If I lived in his district, he’d have my vote. I believe ALL of Congress should be in prison! (most anyway) :-) One down, 534 to go!

What is important is not the Nation wide look at the number of new voters, what is important is the number of new voters in swing states. Especially the fictional voters that ACORN registered, if they turn out we have no chance.

Wow, this does look to be interesting news. Now it is turnout. One other thing, look at DU and other sites, they have begun gloating. If they all think they have this in the bag, then maybe they’ll sleep in at their parent’s basement on Nov 4 and not worry about voting.

FReepers who live in “swing” states need to do some campaigning...Print signs...”Obama = Socialism” etc. and paste them on posts at busy intersections, etc.

Every little bit helps.

Go down fighting!!

I have a sign in my yard: “Tell Senator Government, ‘I’m with Joe the Plumber’ on Nov. 4.”

Unfortunately, I live in IL, so won’t do much good. We have a lot of Democrats who have faithfully voted in every election since the 19th century.
