SAN FRANCISCO -- Federal immigration authorities raided more than a dozen locations in San Francisco, Richmond and South San Francisco today, arresting several alleged members of the notorious MS-13 street gang, authorities said.
Authorities said the investigation targeted a San Francisco-based faction of the violent group, also known as Mara Salvatrucha, which started in Southern California with roots in El Salvador.
"This is a major take-down," said Northern California U.S. Attorney Joe Russoniello, adding that the investigation dealt with alleged drug trafficking, gun running, terrorism and extortion activities of the group. He declined to provide further details about the raids.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Virginia Kice said that "targeting the criminal activity and violence perpetrated by street gangs is one of ICE's top priorities."
Most recently, authorities say, members of the San Francisco's 20th Street clique of the gang have been tied to at least five slayings in San Francisco, including the June 22 shooting in the city's Excelsior district that led to the deaths of Tony Bologna and his sons Matthew and Michael. Police say the family was mistaken for gang rivals and targeted after a shooting earlier in the day.
Police have also tied the group to the March 29 murders of Ernad Joldic and Phillip Ng, men shot as they were sitting in a car early in the morning out front of a home in the Excelsior.

The raids were part of ICE’s Operation Community Shield, which initially targeted the MS-13 group but has since grown to handle other street and prison gangs.
Yup, over 60 arrested in 7 states, also they are being court ordered not to uwear or distribute their logo.
Why are they taking down Obama’s “Internal Security Force”? These people are needed on the front lines in the internal struggle against reactionary forces.
Lock them up. If they are deported they will be back within .2 seconds (the maras are now recruiting heavily from Mexican illegals, it is not just a US/El Salvador thing)
Thank goodness. The people that live in that area deserve to be safe.
Predict that the left loons will soon be protesting the raids and arrests and make the ms gang the “victims”.
Most people have no idea how nasty MS is. They’ve infested nearly everywhere in the oountry, and their worst day here beats anything they ever saw at home, so they’re hard to deter. Every little bit helps, glad they got some of them off the streets.
