One side cast its argument as supporting equal rights and the other as being for traditional family values, bringing them down on opposite sides of the Proposition 8 same-sex marriage ballot measure.
The Sunday afternoon setting in Salinas was a raucous "traditional family values" parade down Main Street, whose participants mostly supported a "yes" vote on 8 while those endorsing a "no" vote lined the three-block parade route.
The ballot measure in the Nov. 4 General Election, which would change the state Constitution, eliminates the right of same-sex couples to marry, according to the official sample ballot. It "provides that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." A "yes" passes the proposition and changes the constitution while a "no" keeps it intact.
In May, the California Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples had the right to marry. Massachusetts also permits same-sex marriages, while Rhode Island recognizes it from other states. Four states allow civil unions between same sexes, while three provide spousal rights to unmarried couples.
Salinas police estimated 700 to 800 people walked in the parade, most of them continually chanting "Yes on 8."
The "No on 8" supporters numbered a couple of hundred, said Lisa Cisneros, a volunteer with the Monterey County Committee Against 8. Their counter-event was called the "No on 8 Visibility Action & Silent Witness."
But silent the event was not.

Thanks for all your hard work and for posting the threads.
Good job!
Thanks much. :-)
I’ve been to Salinas many times.
It is hard to envision Salinas as being in the forefront of competing sides of any social issue.
It is a sleepy little hardworking farm community.
