FAYETTEVILLE - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama brought his campaign to the conservative-leaning eastern part of North Carolina on Sunday, warning people not to be hoodwinked by a series of Republican charges in the final weeks of the campaign. Obama, the Illinois senator, said Republicans were assailing his character and were leveling baseless charges of socialism in speeches, robo calls and in campaign flyers.
If he "can't figure out why" he is being (accurately) labeled socialist, maybe he should take a look at his radical, socialist friends and associates, and maybe he is as dumb of an empty shirt as people are saying he is...
My opponent has made his choice, Obama told an overflow crowd of more than 10,000 people at Crown Coliseum.
Senator McCain's campaign actually said a couple of weeks ago that they were going to launch a series of attacks on my character, Obama said. T hey said if we keep talking about the economy. we are going to lose. That is one promise that John McCain has kept. They have been attacking the heck out of me.
I can take a few more weeks of John McCain's attacks, Obama said. But the American people can't take four more years of failed economic policies.
This was Obama's first foray in the eastern part of the state in the general election an area that has long been dominated by conservative white Democrats and a region bristling with military installations. He made a surprise stop at a Dunn hotel and picked up lunch at a barbecue restaurant in Fayetteville restaurant where a patron accused him of being a socialist.
In recent days there has been an intense effort by the Republican ticket to reclaim the lead in a GOP-state with McCain having twice been in the state in the last week, as well as an appearance by vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
I think it's very competitive, and very close, David Axelrod, Obama's chief strategist, said in an interview. The fact that the Republican presidential and vice presidential candidates were here in late October, shows how close it is.
But Axelrod suggested an Obama victory here would not be easy.
With apologies to New York, Axelrod said, if we can make it here we can make it anywhere.
In some ways, Cumberland County might be McCain country because of the presence of Fort Bragg's huge Army base and because of McCain's military background and heroism at a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
But there there were some veterans at the Obama rally. They included Frederica Garvin, a staff sergeant on the Army Reserve, who served as a military police woman in Iraq during the current conflict and in Kuwait during the Persian Gulf War. What are we fighting for now? Garvin said. All these young kids getting killed over there for no reason.
Garvin, a 49-year old Fayetteville resident, met a friend at a nearby Waffle House tat 4:30 a.m. to make sure they got a good seat for the 1:30 rally. Garvin, a Democrat, attended her first presidential rally since Jimmy Carter in 1976.
Obama did not focus on military issues during his Fayetteville trip. But he did tout his newly minted endorsement by Colin Powell, who served as chairman of the joint chiefs of staff under the first President Bush and as secretary of state under the current President Bush.
Obama said he was proud to have th support of a brave solider in a city and state that knows something about great soldiers.
But Obama in his 34-minute speech focused on the economy rather than on foreign affairs.
He said the U.S economy was bleeding jobs, and that credit was drying up.
The question is not are you better off than you were four years ago, Obama said. Are you better off than you were four weeks ago?
He said both McCain and Palin had accused him of socialism. It's kind of hard to figure out why.
This from the man who wants to:
- Let tax increases happen automatically when current tax laws expire - increases hitting many brackets
- Increase taxes on higher earners - the people who can create new jobs
- Increase social spending by nearly a Trillion $ in proposals (so far)
- Increase welfare check writing to those who pay no income taxes ("tax credits")
- Greatly increase the number of people who pay no income taxes as all.
Listen, big-eared B.H. Obama: your intended actions define you as socialist! Spreading the wealth around like this, irresponsibly, IS SOCIALISM!!!
Obama: “Instead, Let Me and My Band Of Chicago Thugs “Hood” Wink You!”
Another Marxist technique, when you are lying 24/7, accuse your opponent of lying. The only hoodwinking going on is Obama, he’s been doing it non-stop since 1982 at Occidental College. His whole life is a lie. And the hoodwink line comes from Malcolm X so that is racial code as well.
Period.
Ooooh, when Bill Ayers’ Friend mimics Malcolm X it just puts a tingle up my leg.
Hey - two can play this game!
Some conservative blacks have stated that ‘hookwinked’ is a phrase in the black community for the KKK.
It seems that Senator Obama is an expert on the use of *hoodwinking.*
Ya - but, I don’t believe that is actually the origin of the term!
Shoot I heard he was called a socialist by the people there.
I thought the word “bamboozeled” usually followed the word “hoodwinked”.
I’ll bet Garvin is black and I’ll bet getting up at 4:30 in the morning did nothing to get her up front where the cameras are. Those seats are reserved for white folks.
Obama, the pathological liar and con artist, is the only one not being truthful. Don’t believe a thing he says and you’ll be better off.
That poor woman at the bbq joint was mislead by that mean old racist McCain. She believed what he said about O being a marxist.
Did you mean Obamboozled?
It is not the original origin but a word co-opted by Malcolm X to talk to the black community.
I was just thinking about Mrs Fanning, the Obamabots are so crazed that speaking out could lead to a fight, most people do not want to get into a brawl, but they won’t vote for the man.
