Mary Warnock: Legalise assisted suicide, for pity's sake
UK Guardian ^ | 10/19/08 | Mary Warnock

The death of Daniel James, the 23-year-old rugby player who visited a Swiss euthanasia clinic last month, is the most appalling burden his parents will ever have to bear, whether or not they are prosecuted, and whether or not they are sent to prison for what they did on his behalf.

They decided to believe him when he said that after he was paralysed in a scrum his life was of no value to him, and that he would prefer death. It was not a sudden decision but one taken over many months, during which he had shown, by attempting suicide, that he was in deadly earnest. They made a deliberate moral choice, and carried it out in what must have been an agonising journey to Switzerland. Their courage has been enormous; but it would be hard to deny that they acted unlawfully.

Not everyone faced with the life that Daniel James foresaw for himself would react in the same way. There are many stories of young people suffering similar injuries who have decided that their lives are still worth living, however limited their physical powers. But there are others who cannot stand the thought of forever being completely dependent on others, however loving. In their eyes, life in itself is not valuable, only the freedom and enjoyment that life gives. Daniel James had time to decide that without such freedom death would be better. It was this decision that his parents respected, allowing him his final freedom to choose

But the more crucial argument is this: we have a moral obligation to take other people's seriously reached decisions with regard to their own lives equally seriously, not putting our judgment of the value of their life above theirs.

Moral relativism at it's finest -- the culture of death denies that they love death, they just want to kill other people.

One of my law professors was a quadriplegic. What a brilliant guy. Injured in college, he went on to get his degrees and teach. Yeah, he had an assistant, but was also married with adopted kids and his own practice on the side.

Once “putting them down” at their request becomes accepted practice, over time, it becomes easier not to deal at all with any disability and just advocate killing them.

Everything is incremental.

This makes me think of the story that was posted here a month or two ago about the female “assisted suicide advocate” who had been diagnosed with cancer. As soon as she was diagnosed, she trashed her “living will.” ROTFL!!! Hypocrite!

The slippery as referenced in the post below!- FIGHT!

Pro lifers brought a knife to a gunfight most of these years. The last couple of years, the vitriol of the pro baby killers has risen substantially. We have now brought a gun to a missle fight. I am sorry, but this thing has come to a head now, and I believe it is the Lord our God who has done it. Heres why. During my lifetime, I have never seen 2 sides having a candidate who so clearly illustrate the scripture “I put before you both death, and life; CHOOSE LIFE”. I believe this is Gods ‘calling to account” moment in History for our country. By this election He will either remove his Providence from a nation who clearly does not want him here, or he will pour out his spirit for those who have correctly chosen life. We have fought, but not with all our being these thirty years. We have not informed the public to the horrors because people found it too objectionable. Our youth has been “spared” the grizzly details by well meaning parents and clergy, with only the very few “extremists” showing and telling the truth. We ALL must become right to life extremists! If Humane Vitae taught us nothing, it showed us prophetically the decline of morality ahead of time. We did not stop it, we called it “progress”. 50% of catholics divorce, think some form of abortion is ok, and will VOTE for obama! Wake UP america, the next defensless “infirmity” may be your OWN- eldery, mentally or physically challenged ect... We already have an african american genocide, and a rush to eliminate the poor among us (abortion clinics 2 main targets on a grand scale since already 90% of medically deficient babies are already aborted!) Wake up and fight! This message IS objectionable, so BE objectionable! You can try coating Sh*t with sugar, but IT DOESN”T WORK! We need to stop letting them lick the SUGAR and EAT THE SH*T! We will all meet our maker one day, how will YOU answer the question- What did you do with the free will I gave you? Did you fight for the least among you or did you worry about the economy, gas prices, ect... FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT with all you HAVE!

This is precisely what the Nazis did.

Who cares? If godless pansies, however suffering, choose suicide and the eternal damnation that comes with it, let them! Those who assist in these suicides will have their own judgement day as well. Let the animals kill each other, I say.

I do agree with you. There is something absolutely prophetic about this nexus, this choice in time.

And what will you do when insurance companies and/or the government deny all treatment except euthanasia?

I don’t think it’ll be that dystopic. Insurance/govt offering euthanasia as the ONLY option rather than treatment would only lead to a mass revolt and civil war. That slippery slope is a bit farfetched for me. Like gay marriages leading to man and elephant marriages. No, it’ll just be fags being fags. We don’t need this kind of alarmism.
