We don't have to go as far back as Rome. As a missionary, since 1992 I have spent a lot of time in Russia, Kazakhstan and other once socialist countries, ending in “stan”. Under socialism everyone made the same $3.50 a month (I'm not kidding). A doctor, teacher or street sweeper all had equal pay. As a result, the people had lost all ambition and the nations are in poverty.

Americans are some of the few people on earth who are ever asked the question, “Where do you want to eat tonight, or what do you want for supper!”

Reread the classic “Amimal Farm”

Few? All of Europe does. England does. Many people of South America do. Mexico does.
